January 18th
GMS Families,
Even though we've had a very cold week and students hopes for a snow day did not happen, we've had a productive four days. Our basketball teams are doing a great job, our theater students are preparing for a musical, our band and choir groups are gearing up for UIL competition, and our cheerleaders and dance team are doing the same. There is so much happening right now and our kids are hard at work.
This Thursday, GMS held a Spelling Bee! We're so proud of our talented students and will share the winners with you below.
Did you know that GMS 8th graders are preparing to transition to high school by meeting with the high school counselors to select their courses and our 7th graders are gearing up for a visit to our TECC to learn more about CTE (Career and Technology Education) course offerings available to them? Our kids are growing up!!

Next week is our second annual, district-wide Portrait of a Graduate Festival sponsored by AVID! Each day next week will correspond with a Portrait of a Graduate skill along with an activity and dress up day that supports getting college ready in. We look forward to discussing what each Portrait of a Graduate quality looks like along with spreading college readiness and knowledge campus-wide!

TECC Field trip for 7th graders- Don't forget that signed parent permission forms are due Friday, Jan. 19th for students to attend the field trip to the GCISD Technology Education & Career Center (TECC) on January 24th. The TECC offers many classes of interest to all GCISD students, including but not limited to:

GMS Counselors continue to work with 8th grade Ponies on what they currently think they want to take in high school. They encourage using pencil on this document as it is a living, breathing document. More information regarding high school planning is available on the GMS Counselor’s webpage

Play It Safe:
Play It Safe is a multi-session curriculum about healthy relationships. It is presented by The Women’s Center.

GCISD Parent Education for January:
A Conversation about Eating Disorders Project HEAL will provide valuable information about recognizing and responding to eating disorders on January 23 at 6:30 pm at the GCISD Administration Building.
Stewards of Children Learn how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse; January 25 at 6:00pm at Glenhope Elementary.
Cotillion is a GMS PTA-sponsored 4-week social dance curriculum combined with an emphasis on good manners and social etiquette. Cost is $50 per student and occurs each Friday in February ( February 2, 9, 16, 23). Each week will be a different theme. Community Service
Please remember that the first ½ of community service hours are due at the end of the semester.
As we start the spring semester, it is a good time to check with students regarding supplies. They might need markers, ear buds or colored pencils.
6th- 6th grade just began reading the novel Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar. This is an exciting science connected fiction novel. After reading the novel in ELA we will be begin working on a PBL making science and math connections to content in the novel.
Please remind students to come to class prepared-- charging cable, sharpened pencil, etc.
New policy with membean. Minutes begin on MOnday and I check on Friday. If a student does not complete the 30 minutes during the week, there are no makeups
7th- TECC center field trip is on Wed, Jan 24th. Please encourage students to wear a GMS or STEM shirt.
8th- Field Trip 1st Payment due Jan 26th! Checks should be made payable to "GMS STEM Booster Club"

THEATRE NEWS:
The Theatre department is happy to announce our school wide musical and our one act play for this year. Our musical is Once Upon a Mattress, and our one-act play is Complaint Department and Lemonade. Both are wonderful comedies.
The one act will be performed in February and the musical in April. We hope you’ll come see both!

7th and 8th grade girls basketball had another successful week against Dawson Middle School Tuesday and Thursday night. 7th grade was unable to pull out a win, but showed some great efforts and have made some major improvements since the beginning of the season. 8th grade A, B and C teams slayed the Dragons at home with a total point count of 89-31. They absolutely dominated!
Both 7th and 8th girls play away at Heritage Middle School next Monday and Thursday. Come support your Lady Ponies!

A - The A team lost to a strong Dawson team last night. Charlie Hutto played his best game of the year and led the Ponies in scoring and was the offensive player of the game. Tyler Meers was the defensive player of the game. Victor Dela Cruz was the hustle player of the game.
B - The Pony B Team lost against Dawson. The offensive player of the game was Chris Price. The defensive player of the game was Vincent Heredia. The hustle player was Zane McHorse.
C - The C Team dropped their game against Dawson. Wes Cunningham was the offensive player of the game. Defensive player went to Elijah Canafax. Hustle player went to Jordan Chavez.

Grapevine lost a tough game against Dawson Middle. The offensive player of the game was Aasim Kamruddin who led all scorers. The defensive player of the game was Leo Covington who led the team in rebounds. The hustle player of the game was Camren Mobh who shot

The Ponies played a tough matchup against the Dawson Dragons, losing by a final score of 37 to 14. Offensive player of the game goes to Caleb Miles who had 4 points. Defensive player of the game goes to Saiviahn Shockley who had 3 steals. Hustle player of the game goes to Michael Allen.
Grey:
The Ponies played the Dawson Dragons tonight, losing by a final score of 43 to 8. Offensive player of the game goes to Brady Cornelius. Defensive player of the game goes to Evan Curtis. Hustle Player of the game goes to Logan Bennett.

Dual Language is sponsoring our Campus-wide fundraiser and inviting students to participate in a fun-filled Color Battle. We are so excited to invite the whole campus to participate as well as to support of efforts in raising money to go to San Antonio. Our 8th grade AP students will be taking a trip to further our knowledge, understanding, and experience of Hispanic culture. Thank you for being a part of making our Dual Language program here at GMS so rewarding and fun!
Digital Citizenship Week
GCISD is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week January 9-19. In GCISD, digital citizenship is embedded in the curriculum and revisited any time a class is using technology. In addition, there are two times during the year that we have a district-wide focus on digital citizenship: Back-to-School and in January after returning from the holiday break. We teach digital literacy utilizing Common Sense Education’s K-12 digital citizenship curriculum.
