Teacher Feature
Mr. May has a wife, Cynthia, and a 4 year old son, Lincoln. He earned a bachelor's degree in Science from Alabama A&M, and played baseball for 4 years. He finished his master’s in Educational Leadership (Administration) this past year from West Alabama. Growing up, he wanted to be a professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers. His favorite musical artists are Metallic, Rage Against the Machine, Led Zeppelin, and some Motown. Mr. May’s favorite class in high school was Biology, P.E., and any class with his crush Rachel in it (don’t tell his wife that). Also, he would like to remind everyone to chase your dreams strategically, make a positive difference in the world, and find something you’re passionate about to do that you get paid for! Lastly, he wants you to know that you can influence your family tree, and wants you to attack the day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

AHSAA “BYLAW OF THE WEEK”
Scenario: Coach Winfrey is the Junior Varsity, girls’ basketball coach at SS Long High School – an AHSAA member school. In order to continue to improve and get more experience, she decides to coach an AAU team this spring & summer. Because Coach Winfrey is about to wrap up her JV season, she wants to have tryouts for the AAU team this week (January 25th, 2020) and will invite some of the SS Long players to participate in the tryout.
Question: According to AHSAA Bylaws, is the tryout permissible during the season, can SS Long players tryout and be on her team?
Rule III, Section 15. Coaching Outside the School Year:
No administrator, coach, or non-faculty coach from a school’s staff of the same sport may hold organized practice (except during the allowable period) or competition for its school or its feeder school players during that sport outside the sports season during the school year. Members of a school coaching staff are not allowed to coach girls or boys players from his/her school sports team during the off-season during the school year except for the allowable period.
Rule III, Section 22. Camps/Summer Camps.
Schools may not participate in a camp outside of the allowable three weeks for that sport.
Note: If a coach conducts more than the allowable three weeks of practice competition, or violates allowable three weeks period, he/she could be restricted from coaching that team the following school season.
Note: Practice competition against non-member schools is prohibited except in team camps hosted by colleges and universities. Member schools may not participate in practice competition against non-school teams (travel, club, etc.)
Ruling: While Coach Winfrey may coach any of the SS Long school teams during the allowable periods, or practice all summer long, she CAN NOT coach an AAU team with members from SS Long where she is employed or coaches. This would include any student-athlete, grades 7 – 12 with the exception below:
Coaches may coach their own children in more than three weeks of allowable competition if none of the coach’s other players are on the child’s team.
Penalty: Coach Winfrey and her school would be in violation due to the fact she coached the school players outside of the allowable three weeks of competition on a non-school team against non-member schools. As a result, either Coach Winfrey is ineligible to coach at SS Long or its feeder schools or the said student-athletes would be ineligible to participate in basketball at SS Long for the following school year. Furthermore, if Coach Winfrey and the said student-athletes participate together in any AHSAA contest during the following school year, sanctions (including fines, forfeitures, and restitution) would be assessed.
Proactive Measures: Ensure that coaches, of all sports, understand they are not allowed to coach their school’s or feeder school’s students in competition during or outside the school year on a non-school team.
