A Message from your Principal ~
As I reflect at the end of this very unusual school year, I want to recognize the number of positives rather than dwell on the negatives: Students following social distancing expectations and wearing face masks, everyone being patient and polite when working through the changes, not only in education, but also in society, and staff and students communicating with isolated individuals and keeping their spirits up. I am so proud of how well you all have handled the chaos and have rose above it. We are not sure yet how the 2020-2021 school year will begin. Please watch our website, Facebook, and Twitter for updates.
The laptop and textbook turn in went really well, everyone did a great job. We had 1200 laptops returned, and only have a few more that still need to be turned in. A company is cleaning and reimaging all the laptops. Those of you who did not turn in your laptop or have textbooks to return, can bring those to East High between 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM during the week. You will need to buzz in at the Main Doors.
Class sizes are very tight next year and schedule changes will be limited to mistakes we made. Many classes are full at this time. Counselors will be available the two weeks before school starts for any mistakes we made on your schedule. The best way to contact them is by email.

Seniors in the class of 2021 will need their Meningitis vaccination records turned into Ms. Treft by the start of school, in August. You will not be able to attend school until Ms. Treft has the records.
Class of 2020, my heart goes out to you. Thank you for your leadership, positive attitudes and looking towards a brighter future - you will be missed! We know you will do great things and make the world a better place. We may still have the opportunity for a Commencement Ceremony on July 25th at 6:00 PM.
Our teachers and staff were amazing during this time, making sure students and our community had what they needed. We had staff delivering meals, food, computers, hotspots, homework, disinfecting the building, preparing meals, and just talking to students. Thank you for your leadership and hard work.
Please stay safe this summer and let’s hope the COVID-19 trend lines continue to go down.

Notes from the Nurse -
Hello,
This is Mrs. Treft, your school nurse from East High. This message is regarding immunization requirements for your student’s senior year at East High. Iowa law has requirements that affect your student.
Your senior student needs to have (1) dose of meningitis vaccine after the age of 16. Your student may have already had one required dose of this in middle school, however, you need to make sure a second one was given after the age of 16.
You will probably need to check with your physician’s office to see what your status is. If you have a copy at home or receive a new copy from your Dr’s office with an update, please send it to me at East High. Our fax number is 712-274-4670.
This is very important to take care of before August 24th as Iowa law states this is mandatory before admittance to their senior year.
Thank you for your help in this matter.
Nursing Notes for Parents of 11th grade students:
There are new requirements for your student’s immunization status at school, please read the following so you know what you will need to obtain for your child so you can fill the needed requirements before the start of the 2020/2021 school year.
Effective January 11, 2017, the change requires a one-time dose of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine received on or after 10 years of age for applicants in grades 7 and above, if born after September 15, 2004; and 2 doses of meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccines for applicants in grade 12, if born after September 15, 1999; or 1 dose if received when applicants are 16 years of age or older. There is no grace period for this and it needs to be done prior to the school year.
Meningococcal disease caused by any serogroup is very serious. Approximately 10 to 15% of people with meningococcal disease die even with appropriate treatment. Of those who recover, up to 20% suffer from serious after-effects, such as permanent hearing loss, limb loss, or brain damage. Meningococcal vaccines are very safe and effective at preventing meningococcal disease. The meningococcal vaccine is 85 – 100% effective at preventing infection from the subtypes of meningococcus found in the vaccine. The National Immunization Survey (NIS) Teen, 2015 results indicate 75% of Iowa adolescents 13-17 years of age have received one dose the Meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine. The national average for one dose of meningococcal vaccine is 81.3%. The meningococcal secondary school vaccine requirement will help Iowa achieve and maintain high adolescent vaccine coverage levels, protecting the health of adolescents, friends, families, and communities.
What does this mean for you? You will need to call your physician’s office and make an appointment for the meningitis vaccine. Most students do not have this requirement met as it is new. You will need to check your home records with the dates above, or call your physician’s office to see what your status is. If you have no insurance, you may call the Siouxland District Health Department at 279-6119 to schedule an appointment. Some of you may have received this vaccine but not given a copy to East High as it was not required, so if you have received it within the dates above please send a copy to school. Any records can also be faxed to East High at 712- 274-4670 with attention to the school nurse. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
