Your Morning Announcements!
College Acceptances
I am very happy to say that, as of today, our scholarship total is already at a staggering +$28M! On a per-student basis, we have already exceeded last year’s mark.
Seniors please continue to turn in your acceptance and award letters to Mr. Jaramillo.
Congratulations, Seniors! I want to also share the counts of acceptances to selective colleges and universities we have this year. Also, BIG thanks and kudos to all SEM faculty/staff. This is a remarkable list (which far outstrips previous years). Students, I want you to thank your teachers. This, more than your scholarship total (which you're on your way to surpassing last year's graduating class scholarship $$ total - even with a smaller 2020 senior class), shows the breadth and depth of opportunities that have been created for you by your teachers, support team at SEM.
- Over 10% of the senior class admitted to Rice. We must have set a record as a public high school with 10 students accepted into Rice University this year.
- 10% of the senior class admitted to the Ivy League
However, you must stay the course! There have been cases of rescinded admissions. Stay on top of your academic performance & attendance.
Attached (bottom of this Smore) you can find our ASP flyer that advertises our upcoming Zoom sessions covering an array of topics for our graduating seniors. Additionally, Mr. Jaramillo is maintaining his personal availability for appointments here. Take advantage of our virtual advising.
It's a joy to share with all of you here in our student achievements. My gratitude goes to our amazing teachers, counselor, ASP, and district leadership team for concerted efforts. I'm certain that our future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is in good hands.
Once again, congratulations SEM!

ASP Virtual College Advising Works!
We made it through week two!
ASP is continuing to help our students with their college choice. We had (at least) 99 students set up one-on-one meetings with our college advisors this week! Beyond that, ASP offered 14 virtual group sessions via Zoom that students and parents could drop in and get help with their college questions. Topics ranged from financial aid verification forms to award letter review and comparison to housing and enrollment waivers and deposits.
What's Up for Week 3, starting April 6th?
The short week is going to require ASP to pack the calendar. ASP has 27 virtual group sessions scheduled for this week. In addition to school-based open work sessions, ASP will be hosting workshops for admitted students with Texas A&M (College Station), UTD, UTA, UNT and UNT Dallas. The area admissions officers will be joining the sessions to help with questions and paperwork, and we have invited a few ASP alumni from those schools to come share their experiences with students.
We will continue to offer sessions on Award Letter Review, Verification, Enrollment and Housing, and will start to add sessions for Dallas County Promise. Advisors will continue to offer individual appointments for students and families.
Our ASP event calendar is up to date and includes links for students to sign up for the Zoom sessions. (We do advance sign ups to protect our students and ensure that the appropriate people are in the classroom.) Updated flyers with QR codes that take students directly to the sign up form are attached at the bottom of this Smore.

Social and Emotional Learning
Remember that everyone need breaks and a regular emphasis on self-care (especially during stressful times like now)! Self-care is valuable and a worthwhile investment of our time.
- Consider giving yourself a few minutes alone, saving some time for a favorite activity (TV show, reading, puzzles, etc.)-- whatever provides you with a moment to re-charge and bring some joy!
- Here are a few resources to reflect on and identify your own self-care strategies:
- Self-care assessment
- Self-care plan (worksheet)
- Self-care tips
- Consider finding a self-care buddy to ensure that you both are using your self-care strategies often!
