FROM YOUR TEACHERS
SECOND
THIRD
Do you know the elements to a good story? Third graders have been learning this week about the characters, setting and the plot of a story. We are even beginning to write our own story!
The Continent Song is a big hit in 3rd grade! We are learning how to find and label both the continents, oceans and the countries in North America. Students are also working on rounding to the nearest 10 and hundred.
FIFTH
"This week Ms. Fralish's science courses have been working on learning the scientific method. The students have applied their knowledge in conducting a variety of experiments about making bubbles! The Slytherin class found that hot water creates larger bubbles than room temperature water. The Gryffindor class found that fresh water makes larger bubbles than salt water."
SIXTH
Innovative Learning
This week in history we wrap up our first unit on the 6 Essential Elements of Geography and are moving on to Map Projections and Map skills. We will finish laying the groundwork next week and move on to our discussions of the First Humans. Look for some student created maps in next week’s newsletter!
This week in ELA we made comic strips for the stories that we read. We also had a Socratic Seminar asking some of the tough questions. We also figured out what our treasure is!
Face to Face
In math, all classes have begun Unit 1 of this year's standards. Pre-Algebra students are learning about the Real Number System, working with decimal-fraction conversions and square roots. Accelerated 6th grade students are learning about Rational Numbers, performing operations with fractions and decimals as well as adding and subtracting integers. 6th grade math students are learning about ratios, finding equivalent ratios and modeling ratios in various ways. All math students (Face to Face and Innovative Learning) will be taking Math Benchmark 1 next week to show their current understand of this year's standards. Please be on the lookout for more information regarding benchmark testing which will be sent to your email on file with the school.SPECIALS

STEM
I would like to take a moment to share the biggest THANK YOU to all of our families and students during our first two weeks of Innovative Learning. We are excited to welcome our Face to Face learners back to campus this week. This transition brings us a new routine, and in time this routine will make things smoother for all learners.
Face to Face
This week, our face to face learners listened to the story “The Most Magnificent Thing” by Ashley Spires. In this story, A little girl and her canine assistant set out to make the most magnificent thing. But after much hard work, the end result is not what the girl had in mind. Frustrated, she quits. Her assistant suggests a long walk, and as they walk, it slowly becomes clear what the girl needs to do to succeed. A charming story that will give kids the most magnificent thing: perspective! We used our new perspective to complete our first STEM Challenge. Our K-1 learners used clay to build their own version of the Most Magnificent Thing. Our 2-5 learners practiced their teamwork skills, even while social distancing! STEM students built an Index Card tower, challenged to only use index cards with details the students had in common written on each card. For example, some groups wrote on their individual index card “We both have a brother” or “We both have a dog and a cat”. Our tallest tower was 2 feet and 3 inches… that's a lot of things in common!
Innovative Learners
This week, our Innovative Learners have been introduced to a new type of assignment! In previous weeks, students in K-5 practice completing assignments using the drag and drop feature in Google Slides to respond to STEM questions. This week, students have completed a STEM Game in order to answer questions about STEM. Our 2-5 learners played a jeopardy-style game show with STEM related questions. Our K-1 learners played a “video game” style STEM game, and included directions automatically read on each slide! I look forward to continuing to use the “audio” feature in assignments for our K-1 learners, so I may read questions or content to them once they open the file. I thank our families so much for their feedback, so we may continue improving our Innovative Learning experience together.
