Meadowbrook News
September 23, 2022
From Mrs. Sawatzky
Good afternoon Meadowbrook,
Thank you to those of you who joined us for Curriculum Night. It was great to see you and share some highlights of the year to come.
Sunday night is the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. To honor the holiday, there is no school on Monday, September 26th. Jewish people around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah with feasts, prayers and reflection. Many of our students and families will celebrate and spend the holiday with family and friends reflecting on the past year with gratitude and love. To our families celebrating, we send our wishes for a happy new year to you!
Next Tuesday is picture day at Meadowbrook. I sincerely apologize for holding this on the last day of Rosh Hashanah. We will make sure that this does not happen again. For students who will be absent on Tuesday, we will have picture retakes on Thursday, November 3rd.
As we experience this change in the weather, I want to remind you to have your child dress or be prepared to go outdoors during the school day. Additionally, make sure to label coats, sweatshirts, and outdoor gear with your child's name. This makes it so much easier to find at the Lost & Found!
In partnership,
Natalie
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15th-October 15th is Hispanic Heritage month. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the contributions and the important presence of Hispanic and Latin Americans in the U.S. At Meadowbrook, about 5% of our students identify as Hispanic or Latinx. In addition to enriching our school, our Hispanic-American communities contribute to our government, culture, and economy in amazing ways.
Click HERE for information on ways your family can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month here in Minnesota!
Also, below are two videos you can watch with your children. The first is Pepe And The Parade: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage by Tracey Kyle and the second is Where Are You From by Yamile Saied Méndez and Jaime Kim.

From Nurse Karen
Hello from the Health Office!
Fall is my favorite time of the year - love the cooler weather!
We have many students who are complaining of sore throats, coughs, and feeling unwell. The Pandemic is not over, so I encourage you to do the daily checklist to see if you should send your child to school. Please keep your child home if they are unwell. If you ask your child to “just try to go to school, and if you feel worse, go see Nurse Karen…” this would be a clear indication to keep your child home. Thank you so much for keeping Meadowbrook healthy!
If your child needs an inhaler, emergency medications, or specialized medical plan, please make sure these items have been brought to or shared with the health office. It is a state law that a student cannot keep medications in their locker.
As we get into the cooler and wetter weather make sure your child has outdoor gear to keep them warm. It may be warm in the morning but take a cool turn in the afternoon. Layers are the best thing this time of year! Good footwear is also advised. Kids love to run when they get outdoor time, so make sure their shoes will support this activity.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns (952-988-5104)!
Social-Emotional Learning Survey September 21 - October 5
Building our social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year. We will be asking for your 3-6th grade child to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey they will be completing at school in their homerooms. We will be asking home teachers to reflect on K-2 children.
The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on social and emotional competencies that align with the Hopkins graduate traits outlined in the district's strategic plan (e.g., sense of belonging, and rigorous expectations).
We are asking that all our students participate in the surveys. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they can skip the item altogether. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys. If you have any questions about the SEL survey or would like information about opting out, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You may also choose to opt your student out of this survey no later than September 19th.
Art Adventure
The Art Adventure program will be back again this year in January of 2023. We are currently seeking in-room volunteers to help share an appreciation for art with our scholars at Meadowbrook. The commitment is just three sessions but the experience to interact with kids in the classroom is priceless!
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?
Art Adventure is a wonderful way to engage with students and become a memorable part of their classroom experience. Sign up to lead (often entertaining and insightful) discussions with students about artwork from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) collection. No previous experience is required and no art or art history education is needed at all! All training provided by Mia. Most sessions are delivered in-person but virtual sessions can also be offered.
Looking forward to connecting! Please email us with your desire to participate or any questions about the program - mbartadventure@gmail.com
