Ms. Mary's Class

Class 2C at the Elementary School, ASD, Doha.

Week 26: March 12th, 2015

Dear Parents,

We have worked so hard on Math this week and the perseverance is paying off! The coming Tuesday will be a full school day since we are all off on Thursday and there will be no homework next week. This Sunday will be the last opportunity for you to give to the Nepal Orphanage - please bring your books, notebooks, coloured pencils, anything from the list, and place it in the box outside our room. Finally, after you have read the Newsletter, please share the videos and other resources in it with your children - I put them here so that they are easily accessible to you and to our young learners!

Looking forward to another exciting week at ASD and a great Spring break afterwards!

Kind Regards,

Mary Mulqueen

Garbage Monster: a Karagoz Performance

With The Istanbul Karagoz Puppet Foundation

8 May, 9 May, 6pm

Join us for a contemporary Karagoz performance by the Istanbul Karagoz Puppet Foundation in celebration of the 'Marvellous Creatures: Animal Fables in Islamic Art' exhibition. Karagoz shadow puppetry began in the Mamluk period in Egypt, and travelled to Turkey with the Ottoman conquest of the region. Puppetry is an exciting visual and aural performance with live music and traditional songs to delight the whole family.

Reading & Role Play

Before role-playing, we spent a lot of time summarising our folktales, 'across 4 fingers' or in 4 or 5 sentences. We were careful not to include details that are unimportant and we made sure we included the important ones. This will be a very important skill in Grade 3!

New Math Unit - Solving problems with Addition & Subtraction strategies

Where we are now ....

Subtracting 3-digit numbers using Place Value representation and Vertical subtraction, then proving the answer by adding! We have had marathon sessions in class this week, getting to grips with these quite advanced skills and strategies. Next we will move on to 3-digit numbers that have a zero in the tens place, example: 706 - 389 and finally we will have the summative assessment at the end of that week.
