Lady Duff-Gordon
by Nallely Villalobos
- My name is Lucy Christiana but some people cal me Lady Duff-Gordon. I was born June 13th, 1863. I was 49 when I was on the Titanic. I traveled with my husband Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Gordon. I was lucky to be in first class. My ticket was $17,486.
- At 11:40 p.m. ship's time, watchmen aboard the ship spotted an iceberg, and the ship made a sudden turn to the left, causing it to sideswipe the iceberg. The ice punched holes in the starboard (or right side) of the boat, along a nearly 300-foot (90 m) stretch and it began filling it with water. Six of the ship's 16 water-tight compartments started filling. But this was enough to make the ship begin to sink into the water, at which point the water flowed of the top of these compartments (the "transverse bulkheads") and begin filling the other compartments. Modern estimates suggest that the boat could have possibly limped to shore with only four breached compartments.

The sinking of the RMS Titanic occurred on the night of 14 April through to the morning of 15 April 1912 in the northAtlantic Ocean, four days into the ship's maiden voyage fromSouthampton to New York City. The largest passenger liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at 23:40 (ship's time)[a] on Sunday, 14 April 1912. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, which made it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history
