Oakton HS Student Services Newsletter: May 2022
As the school year draws to an end, testing has intensified for SOLs, AP Exams and final exams. Please remind your students to read their emails thoroughly for important details about the exams such as what to bring, transportation, and testing locations. Testing can also impact our students' mental health. Take a few minutes to read over how parents can support their teens as they navigate this standardized testing season.

Important AP Exam Information
It is officially time for the 2022 AP exams. Please review our Oakton’s AP Exam Information for the exam schedule and updated FAQ’s. Students will receive an AP exam day reminder email the day before their exam. Students are excused for the entire day of classes on their exam day. Students can attend class if they choose. If students miss an exam without an excuse or do not show for their exam, they will be charged accordingly to the AP Exam Fee Matrix.
Students must arrive by 7:45 am for their AM exams and 11:45 am for PM exams. Please remember that afternoon exams typically end around 4:00 pm. Students must provide their own transportation home following the exam.
If your child is sick on the morning of their exam day. Please email kjwarehime@fcps.edu immediately.
Best of luck to all our AP testers. Please reach out to AP Coordinator Katie Warehime kjwarehime@fcps.edu with any questions.
Building Resiliency and Managing Anxiety in Teens - Recording
In case you missed the webinar, “Building Resiliency and Managing Anxiety in Teens” with Dr. Jonathan Dalton from the Center for Anxiety and Behavior Change, please view the recording here. Dr. Dalton defined anxiety and offered practical tools to manage anxiety as well as how parents can help build resiliency in their teens.
Course Registration for 22-23
The course registration deadline for the 2022-2023 school year has now closed. Students and families can no longer make changes to their course requests. The requests that students have made will drive our master calendar creation. Once we have finalized our course offerings and section numbers, we will open up course requests again. At that time, students will only be able to make changes where there is availability.

Immunization Requirement - Rising Seniors
There was a new immunization requirement for rising 12th graders for this school year that we want to ensure all rising 12th grade families are aware. Effective July 1, 2021, all students entering twelfth grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school. Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.
Please provide one of the following documents to Oakton High School as soon as possible:
- An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine at age 16 or older.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given at age 16 or older.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf
Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online or by calling 703-246-2411.
The needed documentation can be provided to the school in one of the following ways:
- Scanned and emailed to the school at OaktonHSOffice@fcps.edu
- Mailed to the school, Attn: Jill Hendelman
- Dropped off in the Main Office, Attn: Jill Hendelman
Please contact Jill Hendelman at 703-319-2810 if you have any questions.
