Talking To My Child About Race
Friday, June 7th Family Breakfast Series
Dear Brooklyn Collaborative Families,
Join school leaders Scill and Imani in a conversation about how to talk to your child about race for our final Family Breakfast Series of the year on Friday, June 7th from 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
We invite you as we open the door to an ongoing conversation about racial identity with your child---part of our school's vision of a diverse and inclusive learning community and our committed focus on racial equity and disproportionality.
How does your child see themselves and their family? What do terms like nationality, ethnicity, and race mean to them? These and the questions below might be conversation starters for you to have with your child and a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn, and see how they view the world.
- What country do you feel most connected to? Why?
- How would you describe your culture? Think about language, food, religion, and cultural norms.
- What racial group do you feel a part of? Why?
These questions are also prompts for us to ask each other as parents. You might also reflect on when has race come up in your conversations with your child? How have you responded?
These questions will anchor our discussion.
We look forward to seeing you for what will be an engaging and reflective discussion.
In partnership,
Scill, Amanda, Imani (BCS School Leaders)
Tracey (BCS Parent Coordinator)
