NRWHS October 2017 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each child for a successful future
Progress Reports Coming Soon!
It is hard to believe, but the 5-week mark is nearly upon us. Our teachers will be submitting 5-week grades beginning on October 6, and you can expect a progress report for your child to arrive in the mail sometime in mid-October. These reports provide a great opportunity for students, parents, teachers, and administrators to not only reflect on the academic progress that has been made but also set goals for the future.
The best way for you to track your child’s progress is to access the Parent Portal online system (accessible from nrwcs.org by clicking on “Parent Portal” under the “for Parents and Students” tab). By logging into the Parent Portal, you can review your student’s attendance record as well as his/her current grades and discipline record. We strongly encourage all parents to take advantage of this great resource.
We have several upcoming events that I would like to make you aware of. Everyone in our school community is invited to attend our annual Open House which will take place on Wednesday, October 18 at 6 pm. Teachers will be on hand to share information about our academic program and answer questions that you may have. We are excited to celebrate our Cougar Pride during Homecoming week which kicks off on October 10! We hope to see you at our home contests throughout the week. Also, we are looking forward to Red Ribbon Week (October 23 – 27) which provides our students with an opportunity to renew their commitment to living a healthy lifestyle.
As always, thank you for your support as we work hard to provide a high-quality education for your child. Please feel free to contact us with questions, comments, or concerns.

Support the Cougar Cupboard!
For those of you who may not know, the Cougar Cupboard is a food pantry located inside the NRW High School and serves students and their families of the North Rose-Wolcott School District. In addition to the pantry, Cougar Cupboard members pack food packs for elementary and middle school students once a month from October until May. Last year club members packed over 900 packs of food to be distributed. If you are in need of food assistance or would like to find out ways to help out or donate, please feel free to contact our main office and they will get you in touch with Nick Wojieck, our Cougar Cupboard advisor. Together we can make the NRW community the best place it can be.
Thanks For Your Support!
Our student sign-out procedures are as follows (quoted from the Student Handbook): "For safety reasons, students will only be permitted to sign out and leave the building if an adult who appears on their contact list in the student management system physically presents himself/herself in the high school main office and provides appropriate identification. The departure must be confirmed by the student’s parent/guardian either via a signed note, email, or a phone conversation with main office staff. Student age does not impact on these procedures (students cannot sign themselves out just because they are 18 years old). The departing student will be called to the main office when the adult arrives; students may not come to the main office early to wait to leave...Students who have been approved to drive to and from school may sign out and leave the building through the main entrance if they have provided written permission from their parent/guardian to do so in advance of their departure. The written confirmation must include the date and time the student will be leaving as well as the reason for the departure and also the signature of the adult contact. Email confirmation will be accepted as long as the email address is recorded in our student management system."
Regarding the new district Dress Code, please note: "A student’s attire, grooming and appearance, including jewelry, make-up and nails, shall: Be safe, appropriate for school and neither distracting from nor disruptive of the educational process; Not include garments that are unduly revealing, such as tube tops, net tops, halter tops, attire that does not cover the midriff or that has a plunging necklines (front and/or back) see-through garments or lewd clothing... 8. Shorts and skirts must be at pass below the length of the middle finger when arms are extended at the sides, even if stocking or leggings are also worn. Appropriate length is defined as mid-thigh. Leggings, spandex garments, jeggings, yoga pants and/or tight exercise pants may not be worn if they are deemed revealing by the building administrator; Not include garments (e.g., pants, shorts, skirts) that have holes or tears that are placed above the length indicated in the item above."
Again, thank you for supporting our efforts to establish and maintain a safe, learning-focused school environment.
Regional ELL Event a Success!
On August 10th, a regional literacy event was held for English Language Learners and their families at Sodus Middle School. Participating districts included Williamson, Newark, Sodus, and our own North Rose-Wolcott. This was the third literacy event this year held by our extraordinary team of English New Language teachers from the Wayne County area. The events have been graciously funded by New York State’s Title III program.
A Book Walk invited students to access a book entitled Where the Wild Things Are via iPads, and students enjoyed being outside and strolling through and listening to the book while they viewed it page by page. A Bingo game was presented with vocabulary from the book, while parents received information about the end of the year NYSITELL testing for English Language Learners. Each student received books in their home language to take home. Soccer equipment was available, and the sport proved to be one of the favorite parts of the evening for the numerous students who participated.
The August evening event, which culminated in an Ice Cream Social hour, was held outside in absolutely perfect weather. Thank you to all of our families who came out for summer literacy!
Updates from the Athletic Department
The North Rose-Wolcott Athletic Department is excited to announce that we will soon be offering the convenience of online registration through FamilyID (www.familyid.com) for athletic team sign-ups, health history form information, consent paperwork and yearly physical updates.
FamilyID is a secure registration platform that provides you with an easy, user-friendly way to register for a program, and helps us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally responsible. When you register through FamilyID, the system keeps track of your information in your FamilyID profile. You enter your information only once for each family member for multiple uses and multiple programs. If you have a student who is a three sport athlete, you would no longer need to complete three yearly paper registration packets.
Stay tuned for further information on how to sign-up and opportunities to come into the North Rose-Wolcott High School Computer Lab if you would like assistance and guidance on how to get started and your FamilyID family profile created.
