A message from the principal
I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving break full of family and fun. Hard to believe we are just one month away from a new year! Our last day of school before Christmas break will be Friday, December 23rd.
We currently have quite a collection of lost and found items. With cold mornings and warm November afternoons, many students started recess with sweatshirts, hats, and mittens, but lost the layers when they heated up playing! We have an organized coat rack just inside the office doors. If you know your child is missing something. Please stop in and take a peek! We also have a picture below of some of the items.
As many of you know, students are working toward earning a bowling reward in January if our they can earn 25,000 Dojo points. Dojo is a great tool to positively acknowledge students and also provide reminders when they need to refocus. If you have not yet signed up for Dojo to receive notification for your child, please contact your child's teacher for more information. Many teachers post homework, pictures, and important announcements using Class Dojo.
I am wishing all of you a very happy and healthy holiday season! Garfield Elementary is a great place to be, and I am grateful everyday to be part of your families! Do not hesitate to call with questions or concerns.
Happy Holidays!
Ms. Cassandra Schultz
Hello parents of our Mathematicians!
It wouldn’t take much to get into a great debate over math instruction in our schools--the “right” way to learn math, the best math program, homework, timed tests, etc. As adults, our experiences and knowledge are going to dictate our beliefs about these math topics. I think one thing we can agree on is that we, teachers and parents, ALL want the children to be successful in math! This year, I hope I can help achieve this by sharing some thoughts, research, and ideas with you. This month, I’d like to share a quote from Carol Dweck, Stanford professor & researcher and author. Thank you for being a positive influence!
Presidential Election
The Garfield Eagles had the opportunity to experience the election process first hand in November! The Student Council organized a school wide Presidential Election on Election Day! Students had the opportunity to cast their vote for who they wanted to see as our next president! Students had voter registration cards and got to cast their ballots in actual voting booths! The Garfield Eagles chose Hillary Clinton as their choice for President.
Thank you to the Student Council for their hard work in planning and organizing this awesome educational experience!
Strike Out Hunger Food Drive
The Student Council held a "Strike Out Hunger" Food Drive in conjunction with the World Series. Our school collected 539 food items for the Salvation Army! Way to go, Garfield Eagles! We made such a positive difference in our community!
The top three classes are as follows:
1st Place - Mrs. Chouinard's class with 112 food items
2nd Place - Mrs. Leinonen's class with 88 food items
3rd Place - Mrs. Borths' class with 81 food items
Congratulations to all Garfield Eagles for doing their part to "Strike Out Hunger" and congratulations to the Chicago Cubs on winning the World Series!
Honesty assembly
For the October Character Trait Kick-Off assembly, my 4th grade class did a skit of Aesop's fable "The Girl Who Cried Wolf" where a shepherd-boy, who watched a flock of sheep near a village, brought out the villagers three or four times by crying out, "Wolf! Wolf!" and when his neighbors came to help him, laughed at them for their pains. The Wolf, however, did truly come at last.
My 4th graders created sheep out of tag board and a lot of cotton balls, tools for the villagers and gave up their recess time to complete them. They worked together to create a play that would be easily understood by everyone at Garfield Elementary. When the play was done, my class shared with the audience the meaning of Honesty: be truthful, be trustworthy, be fair, be faithful, valid, be sincere and tell the truth.
Many thanks to my class, they worked hard to create a super skit for our school: Summer, Billy, Kaya, Dayton, Gianna, Ethan F, Olivia, Gabby, Colten, Madison, Grace, Valeria, Isaiah, Lillian, Kennedy, Ashlie, Alex and Ethan S.

Caring and Compassion assembly
Caring/compassion is showing concern for the well being of others. Caring is showing your concern about someone or something, and by using your words and actions to help. Students will learn that it is possible to show compassion in big and small ways. If a parent is ill, a student can show caring by cleaning the home while the parent is resting. A student can also show caring just by smiling at a new classmate. Caring makes others feel good. It can also make others want to be kind as well - it can be contagious. The secret to practicing caring is to remember to do it often. Compassion and caring are the foundation of respect, remembering to treat others the way we want to be treated.
Please encourage and demonstrate some ways that families can show caring:
Give to help others in need. For example: collect canned goods for a local food pantry, donate gently used clothing and toys, send a card of encouragement to someone who needs a little extra boost.
Show respect to people, property, animals, and the environment.
Be kind to those you know and don’t know.
Listen to others.
Be helpful in situations , at home, school and in the community.
What’s important in life is how we treat each other. At our school let’s make compassion an everyday thing!

Thank you all for helping so much.
We split the funds 3 ways
1. St. Vincent De Paul for the emergency motel voucher program
2. Abundant Life Mission the only family shelter and currently houses most of our families
3. Closet Food Pantry, our own pantry housed at the high school. We use donations to add fresh produce, dairy, eggs, and meat to our pantry staples anytime a family is in need for food.
I feel blessed to work with each of you and the work we can do together is amazing!!

WE ARE IN NEED OF YOUR HELP PLEASE
We are asking for your help. At times, some students are in need a pair of pants, a sweatshirt, a coat, or even a pair of socks or undergarment. We have been fortunate in the past to be able to provide these items to our students.
At this time we are running low on specifically pants and tops for boys and girls. Sweatpants or leggings work great as they can accommodate more sizes.
If you have any clean pants or tops, we would appreciate any donations you could help us with. Children's sizes ranging from a 5-14.
Please call Jen Cunningham, secretary, if you have any questions.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
In addition, we will be sending out notifications through the District Office, so please be sure that your phone and email information is current with your child's school.
