BHS Rotating Day Calendar

BPS District Calendar 2022-2023

Good afternoon,

Just a reminder about the delayed opening for BHS students in grades 9,11, and 12 for tomorrow and Wednesday, 3/29. All 10th grade students will be participating in the ELA MCAS exam. All sophomores need to report to school on 3/28 & 3/29 and their testing locations by 7:45 AM. Testing locations are posted in the main office and outside the LGI.

The start of school for students not participating in testing (grades 9, 11 & 12) will be at 10:29 AM on Tuesday and 10:15 AM on Wednesday. Wednesday starts with Flex Block so seniors still have the privilege of not attending that block if they so choose. Please note that Advisory will not meet on Wednesday, 3/29.

If your child needs to arrive by bus on these test days, they should meet the bus at the regular pick up time and head to the cafeteria, gym, library, or counseling department in the morning. These areas will be open and supervised.

For caregivers of our 10th grade students, please encourage your student to be thorough and take their time on the exam. They have been well-prepared for the exam. It is important that students get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on test days. As the exams will be taken on student-issued iPads, please make sure your student's iPad is fully charged tonight and prior to each testing day.

Thank you for your assistance.

Late Arrival (grades 9, 11, and 12 grade)

In order to ensure that we have ample bandwidth to support the 10th graders taking the MCAS exam electronically, we will delay the opening of school for all other students (grades 9, 11, 12) on March 28-29 and May 16-17. The start of school for these students will be at 10:15 AM and 10:29 AM; please see the full schedule below. Wednesday starts with Flex Block so seniors still have the privilege of not attending that block if they so choose. If your child needs to arrive by bus on these test days, they should meet the bus at the regular pick up time and head to the cafeteria, gym, library or counseling department. These areas will be open and supervised. We will have regular schedules for the Science MCAS on June 6-7, so there is no delayed opening.

APRIL Is the MONTH of the MILITARY CHILD

In an effort to support and honor our students from Hanscom Air Force Base the high school will be hosting a couple of events during the month of April.

1. A breakfast on April 14th during Flex Block in the back cafeteria.

2. PCS (Permanent Change of Station) party for our students who will not be returning to BHS next year. This event's location and time is TBD.

Purple is the color of the Military Child...when you combine the colors of all of the service branches, you get PURPLE. To celebrate our students, we are encouraging everyone to wear purple on April 14th for a "Purple Up Day"....

We are selling purple t-shirts to support our military students and to fund the events. The following link has more details about how to purchase the t-shirts. All t-shirts will be shipped to the high school the week before the 14th. Mr. DeChellis will distribute them. March 26th is the cutoff date to order.

Vaping Devices Installed & Activated

We are pleased to announce that several HALO vaping detection devices have been installed and activated in the school bathrooms at the high school. These devices will notify school officials who may respond to suspected vaping incidents in the school. We remain concerned about the national trends of this behavior and want to encourage students to make safe and healthy choices. We thank our community partners at Bedford Health & Human Services for providing the devices through a community grant.

10th Grade Hearing/Vision Screening

Starting the week of February 27th, all 10th grade students will have hearing and vision screening. Parents will be notified if further evaluation is necessary by their physician. Heights and weights will also be done at this time.

Annual Height and Weight Screening

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health requires the annual height and weight screening protocols to include the calculation of a Body Mass Index (BMI) and percentile for grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. Each child’s height and weight will be used to calculate their BMI. The results will be kept confidential in each student’s school health record.

BMI is a “weight for height for age” index that can be a useful tool in early identification of possible health risk factors among children and youth. If you would like the results of your child’s BMI screening please contact me. Additional information about children’s wellness and fitness is available at www.mass.gov/massinmotion/.

Please feel free to call if you have any questions or concerns. If you do not want your child to participate in this screening please send a written note or email using the email address below.

Thank you,

Relay for Life

Hello Bedford Schools,

We are members of Bedford High School’s Relay for Life Committee, a dedicated student-led group which works to organize fundraisers and recruit participants for the relentless fight against cancer.

Relay For Life is an organization which directly benefits the American Cancer Society by funding research for a cure, patient care/support, rides to life-saving treatment, and so much more!

Each year, Bedford is one of the many towns to host a Relay for Life overnight event. During this activity-filled, magical night, team members take turns walking around the Bedford track. The event is 14 hours in length (although participants can leave as early as they want) and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients do not have the ability to stop fighting because they're tired and neither do we.

Bedford’s 2023 Relay event will happen from Saturday, May 27th at 4pm to Sunday, May 28th at 6 am. Additionally, the months leading up to the event are a time to build your team and start fundraising. Each Relay for Life team and our high school’s Relay committee work hard year-round to raise funds and awareness for cancer in various ways.

We currently have 6 teams signed up who have already started fundraising for our event, but we would like to get as much of the Bedford community involved as possible. Anyone can create a team, or join the event as a solo participant, through the Relay for Life website by clicking the link below and then the “Join this Relay” button! (https://secure.acsevents.org/site/STR?pg=entry&fr_id=104020 ).

You can build a team with your friends or family and compete against other teams in the town to see who can raise the most money to donate to the American Cancer Society. Fundraising for the event is also a perfect way for students to develop leadership skills and put their creativity to work!

All individuals who raise $150 by the day of the event can stay overnight at the turf in Bedford with their teammates to celebrate everyone’s hard work in the united fight to end cancer. If an individual does not raise $150 they will only be allowed to stay until 11pm. Participants can also earn a free t-shirt and other merchandise depending on how much they fundraise.**

Throughout the upcoming months the Relay for Life Committee will be holding different events in the town and schools. Keep an eye out for emails or follow our Instagram (@rflbedfordma) for more information about these opportunities.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the Relay for Life Committee using this email address: bedfordmarelayforlife@gmail.com

You can also visit the Relay for Life website to find out more information about Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society (https://secure.acsevents.org/site/SPageServer?pagename=relay_learn)

We hope to see you all in May,

The Bedford Relay for Life Committee

**If the child is under the age of 18 and raised $150, a parent or guardian must fill out the attached youth participation form in order to stay overnight. The parent can email the form to bedfordmarelayforlife@gmail.com.

Each team must have a chaperone (a parent or guardian over the age of 18). If you would like to be a chaperone, please reach out using the email above!

BHS Prom Dress Pop-Up Event

Prom and semi formal events are coming up soon and BHS will be sponsoring recurring “Prom Dress Pop-Up” events throughout the year. Students will be able to “borrow” a prom dress and accessories, or formal suits from our donated collection. See below for the Pop-Up schedule. We are looking for donations of formal dresses, both long and short, that are sitting in closets at home not being used; as well as formal wear accessories like shoes, purses, jewelry and shawls. We are also looking for formal suit, ties and tuxedo donations and would greatly appreciate any contributions beginning this week. Please dry-clean your donations before dropping off.

If you want to help but don’t have a dress to donate, you can make a financial contribution to offset program costs, which include alterations, dry cleaning, purchase of dress racks and refreshments for the Pop-Up event. Checks can be made payable to BHS - Prom Pop-Up. All donations can be dropped off in the Bedford High School front vestibule after notifying the main office via the buzzer that you’re donating for the Pop-Up. Please email Sandy Arena (sandra_arena@bedfordps.org) or Heather Thacore (heatherthacore@gmail.com) for more information.

Safety/Drop Off/Parking

We will continue to keep all external doors locked this year. Cars may not be idle or parked directly in front of the main entrance as it needs to be cleared for emergency vehicles and for busses. Please know that you are subject to ticketing by the Bedford Police Department if you park in the restricted lane.

Students with vehicles should park in designated student parking spots and need to have a valid BHS parking sticker by October 1. After completing the form is bring a copy or picture of the vehicle registration and license to the main office to get parking permit. The Parking Sticker application may be found here.

If you are dropping off your student, please do so at the front of the building in the student lot or at the side near the public library. Do not enter the bus loop at the front of the school as it causes safety issues for students unloading.

How do I...

Get dismissed? Please bring a note to the main office in the morning. (or call 781-275-1700) Students will be given a dismissal pass to show the teacher and head right out of class at the dismissal time. This helps us to reduce the number of class disruptions.

Get my Aspen ID? If you need your ID or are having trouble logging in please contact tech_support@bedfordps.org

Find my lost items? The lost and found bin can be found in the student office.
