2023-2024 School Year

December 3, 2023
November Character Counts
During the month of November, BBHES focused on gratitude. Students were encouraged to show gratitude throughout the month. The following students were recognized on Thursday with a gold token to use at the book vending machine. Congratulations!
Jingle Bell Jog
Please join us in helping to spread some holiday cheer to families in our school community through the BBHES Jingle Bell Jog! This project, supported by our PSO, helps provide families with a little extra during a time that can be financially difficult. This year we are asking families to donate any amount through this online link or by sending in a cash donation. The donations will help our BBHES families who could use assistance. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Toth (tothc@bbhcsd.org). Donations can be sent to school or dropped off at the main entrance by Friday, December 15th.
To celebrate this season of giving, all of our PreK through 5th-grade students will participate in a Jingle Bell Jog - Fun Run around the playground on December 20th. Students will receive bells to tie to their shoes, and the students will jingle their bells as they walk/run around the playground. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile project and have a happy, healthy holiday season!
12 Days of Holiday Spirit
Below are some festive days for our staff and students to show their holiday spirit.
Message from Food Service...
When sending in breakfast/lunch money to the school building, please clearly list your student's first and last name and grade on the envelope. This helps the food service department deposit the money into the correct student account.
New World Record
BBHES participated in this world record challenge during PE class.
Student Visionaries of The Year Candidates
Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School is excited to participate again in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student Visionary of the Year student leadership program this year. This will be our fourth year participating in this program. To date, Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School has helped to raise over $150,000.00, benefitting the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
This year, our candidate team, Team Compass, consists of Ella Rundo, Kayla Kosla, and Gabby Gawlik. Team Compass and their team members will represent BBHHS in this regional campaign as they compete with 40 other area schools participating in the fundraising competition year.
One of the team's organized events is a Fun 'n' Stuff Family Fun Night for the BBH Elementary School. Details are outlined below. A direct link to purchase tickets can be found here.
This event will sell out quickly so get your tickets now. Tickets make a great Holiday Gift.
If you are interested in supporting Team Compass or learning more about their campaign, you can reach them at llsteamcompass@gmail.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram @llsteamcompass.

Please visit PaySchools Central to apply for free/reduced-price meals, view your student's meal status and transactions, transfer funds between siblings, and add money to their account. Cash or check payment is also accepted at the building level. All menus and meal prices can be found through MySchoolMenus located under the Food Services tab on the district website or through the free mobile app.
Beginning this school year, the Ohio Department of Education has been approved to directly certify students as eligible for free or reduced meals using Medicaid information. Additionally, the State of Ohio now reimburses schools the former household financial obligation of a reduced-price meal ($0.30 breakfast and $0.40 lunch). Therefore, students who qualify for reduced-price meals receive them at no cost. Please contact Food Service Supervisor, Amy Voigt with any questions.

Last Week's Fun!
PAX Tootle Raffle Winners!
Character Counts at BBHES
The word of the month for October is Accountability. Accountability means taking ownership of one's actions and responsibilities. It means giving one's best effort at all times. When you are personally accountable, you take ownership of what happens because of your choices and actions. You do not blame others or make excuses, and you do what you can to make amends when things go wrong. To be accountable is to own your choices!
Three students from each grade level who display this character trait on a regular basis will be chosen to earn a golden coin to use in our Book Vending Machine. We know our students can do it! Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

Upcoming Assessments
As many of you know, beginning in the 2023-2024 school year and in accordance with Ohio’s dyslexia support laws (ORC 3323.251), all Ohio schools must administer an approved tier 1 universal dyslexia screener that can assist in identifying students whose current level of skills may indicate a potential for being at risk of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.
There are no exceptions or exemptions in the dyslexia support laws. All students in grades K-3 must receive the tier 1 universal screener. BBHCSD will be utilizing Acadience (formerly known as DIBELS) in grades K-1 and i-Ready Literacy Tasks in grades 2-3. While some components of these assessment tools have been updated to meet the requirements of the law, they have been used in the past in BBHCSD.
Both assessment tools serve the dual purpose as tier 1 universal dyslexia screeners and determining on-track and off-track (in fulfillment of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee law). The only difference stipulated in the law is all kindergarten students are to receive the tier 1 universal dyslexia screener in January. Thus, the winter administration of Acadience will be used for kindergartners as their tier 1 universal dyslexia screener. Assessments will begin this week and conclude on September 29.
Students in Grades 4 and 5 will also be taking the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic Assessment. The assessment window will be closing on September 29th for all students in grades K-5.

- When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly with your child's first and last name in the memo line.
- Change your child's default pick-up mode in Pikmykid.
- Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
- Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the proper identification.
Important Dismissal Information
- Please go into PikmyKid and set your child's default for pick-up. Choose the mode your child will take most often home from school. Your child will go home based on the dismissal mode set in PikMyKId.
- Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:45 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call your child's grade-level secretary.
- When arriving to pick up your child at the car line, please be sure to announce your arrival in the Pikmykid app (if applicable).
- Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All families were provided two tags during the Meet and Greets. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
- Please do not block our crosswalks. We have students who walk to and from school each day.
- If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.

A Message from Food Service
Breakfast eaters are strongly encouraged to learn their PIN ID number. Since students don’t have their badges in the mornings, this will help speed up the breakfast lines.
When sending in breakfast/lunch money, please clearly write your student's first and last name on the envelope and indicate that the payment is for their breakfast/lunch account.
For grades 3-5, we will be selling one a la carte snack per day. Students must have money in their accounts to purchase. No charges are allowed for those with a zero or negative balance. Students will purchase the items along with their lunch as they check out before sitting down at their table.

PikMyKid Dismissal App
BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. We will update bus numbers as soon as they are made available to us. Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All families will get two car tags which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.
If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.
PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes, quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual, and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s dismissal status should you have a question.
To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/
All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
