Second Trimester in Art
Elizabeth Haddon School, K-5
We have been very busy in the art room, with a variety of activities including drawing, painting, cutting, gluing, weaving, printing, carving, and using clay. Here are highlights from each grade. You can see these projects and many more at our annual Open House on May 27, 2015. I hope to see you there!
The Land of Many Colors
Kindergarteners learned about friendship and equality from the book, The Land of Many Colors. They cut out colorful people and hearts, then traded their heart with a student who had a different color.
Clay Snowmen
First graders rolled balls of clay and learned to attach them to create these charming snowmen. Many chose to make hats, earmuffs, and scarves as well, giving each little snowman a distinct look!
Clay Owls
One of the most anticipated art projects in second grade is the clay owls. This is a great cross-curricular project, as the second graders do an in-depth study of owls in their classroom. We looked at many pictures of owls to get the colors and glazing just right!
Third Grade Weaving
What a talented group of weavers we have in the third grade! Students created these bright and colorful weavings over several art classes, showing great skill and focus. Many students found it so enjoyable and relaxing, they even chose to weave during indoor recess!
Self Portrait Prints
Fourth graders learned all about proportion in the creation of their self-portraits. For example, they were amazed to discover that the space between the eyes is equal to the length of one eye! They traced their portraits onto Styrofoam, rolled block printing ink onto it, and made multiple prints in a variety of colors.
Carved Eraser Stamps
Fifth graders looked at examples of Moroccan tiles, especially the rotation aspect of the design. They each came up with a design of their own, and carved it into an eraser. They used markers to color on the eraser, and printed it while rotating a quarter turn each time. The overall design repetition created intricate patterns in vibrant colors.
