One of the longest standing traditions in Gilbert Public Schools is our Golden Scholars. Here is a LINK to the Campo students that worked hard and earned this recogition.
This is the last week for remote learning. We want to thank our students and parents for remaining postive and engaging throughout this past quarter. In our next newsletter you will find details on how students can return school propterty and pick up the remainder of their belongings.

These are certainly unprecedented times, and during times such as these, we are reminded of the importance of gratitude and community. As a member of our GPS family, I am sincerely grateful for your continued support of our district, your school, and the continued education of your student(s). I know that we will get through this, together.
As we plan for the remainder of the school year, we continue to look for new ways to keep connected. In that light, I would like to welcome you to our new district newsletter, that will arrive in your inbox once a week, filled with updates and useful resources. We will also continue to connect with you via email, our website, and social media.
I thank you, I thank our students, and I thank all of our GPS staff for our collective commitment to our district, and to each other.

Please see below to read the Letter From the District in its entirety.
May 5, 2020
Dear Gilbert Public Schools Families,
With the recent disruption of the normal school year due to the Covid-19
situation, Gilbert Public Schools has made the decision to allow our GPS
students in grades 7-11 to keep their devices over the summer break. This will
allow our students to have continued access to their devices for school-related
purposes. GPS 8th grade students will keep their current device and trade it in when the
2020-21 school year begins for their new device at their appropriate high school.
Smart Alerts
Gilbert Public Schools wants to ensure that we continue to work with parents and
guardians to keep our students and campuses safe, including over the summer. The
GoGuardian content filter has been in place on all student devices since 2016 and the
Smart Alert feature was implemented during the 2018-19 school year. The Smart Alert
feature notifies school administrators if a student’s web activity appears to indicate that
a student is considering suicide and/or self-harm or harm to others. The alerts are sent
to school administrators who will notify parents/guardians and mental health resources,
as appropriate.
It is important, however, that parents/guardians understand the limitations of such tools.
The District makes no warranties of any kind, express or implied, that such software
programs will be able to prevent all incidents of suicide, self-harm, or harm to others.
Furthermore, the District does not assume liability for any of the information received
through these software alerts. Nor does the District's purchase and use of this software
create any duties on the District and its employees towards parents, students, or any
other person or entity.
There is no expectation that school administrators will monitor their emails at all times,
or outside of the regular workday, or when they are away from work. Nor does the
District or its employees assume responsibility to notify parents/guardians of an alert
within a specific time. Again, we encourage all parents/guardians to be engaged in
and supervise their child’s internet use and other activities at home.
Device Protection Plan
As part of Gilbert Public School’s 1:1 technology initiative, parents have the option to
enroll in the Device Protection Plan (DPP) at the beginning of each school year.
Enrollment in the plan minimizes the potential repair and/or replacement fees
associated with the device. With the decision being made to allow our GPS students in
grades 7-11 to keep their devices over the summer break, the DPP will continue as
normal through the end of the current fiscal year, ending June 30th. For those students
who did not have a claim during the 2019-20 school year, the insurance will roll over to
the 2020-21 school year. If the student had a claim or parents/guardians would like to
enroll their student in DPP, this will be available after July 1st. For more information on
DPP please visit Device Protection Plan. Technology Services will continue to service
issues with student devices until school resumes, please call our Helpdesk at (480)
497-3417 from 7 am - 6 pm, Monday - Thursday or visit our parent site for more
information.
Thank you for your continued support of your student’s education during this time.

How Important is Water and Hydration?
As the weather temperatures increase so does the need to ensure adequate hydration.
Drinking enough water every day is important to ensure optimal health and assist in the proper function of our bodies. Approximately 60% of an individual’s body weight is made up by water. As a result, water is essential for the body to survive and properly function at a cellular level.
Water helps the body by:
*Regulating temperature
*Adequately providing lubrication and cushion for joints
*Protecting sensitive body structures and tissue
*Aiding in the process of ridding the body of waste
The dangers of inadequate hydration:
*Dehydration
*Feeling sluggish or tired
So how much water do we need?
*Most healthcare professionals and experts recommend approximately 8 to 15 cups a day; however, it is important to note that this is only an estimation and may need to be adjusted based on individual circumstances.
When in certain circumstances it is important to drink even more water:
*Hot climates
*When engaging in physical activity
*When experiencing fevers, diarrhea, or vomiting
Tips for ensuring adequate hydration:
*Always carry a water bottle
*Consider freezing water bottles to ensure access to cold water throughout the day
*Substitute water for soda and other sugar sweetened drinks
*When eating out, order water instead of other drink choices
*Break up plain water by adding lime or lemon
*Hungry or thirsty? Try drinking water, thirst is sometimes confused with hunger
How can I know if I’m getting enough water?
*When you rarely feel thirsty and urine is colorless or light yellow in appearance you are adequately hydrated!

Project GradNite
Dear CVHS Parents and CVHS community members,
In past years the GradNite Booster club has sponsored the GradNite event the evening before
graduation and invited all graduating seniors to a fun evening spent with their classmates in a safe environment. Food, games, prizes! We have been able to host these evenings through event ticket sales and generous contributions from our Campo Verde High School families and community members. This year the celebration will look different, but our wish to acknowledge our senior’s achievements and wish them well as they start the next chapter of their lives remains the same! We are PROUD of our Class of 2020!
We are reaching out to you, our CVHS Community, for donations of cash, gift cards, or other gifts to be shared with our graduates. We need your help more than ever before. The GradNite Boosters have committed to providing scholarships and gift cards to be raffled off to students participating in National Senior Declaration Day and would like be able to share some extra surprises when they receive their diplomas. Your donations will help this happen!
Please contact Kim Hernandez at markim.h@icloud.com to coordinate donation pickup/delivery.
With the greatest of appreciation,
Project GradNite Boosters

U.S. News 2020 Best High Schools numerically ranked nearly 18,000 schools nationwide this year. The Best High Schools rankings, available online only, are produced in conjunction with RTI International, a global research firm. U.S. News doesn’t collect data directly from high schools – all data comes directly from official third-party sources. U.S. News receives AP and IB data directly from the College Board and International Baccalaureate, respectively, for use in the rankings. The state assessment data and graduation rates are from each state, and other data comes from the U.S. Department of Education Common Core of Data.

Class rank 2020 seniors
Class rank is required and used by colleges and universities on transcripts submitted for entrance evaluation and is based on the grades earned in classes that meet or exceed graduation requirements. Under usual circumstances, senior class rank is determined at the end of the 8th semester. Due to COVID-19, class rank for the 2019-2020 seniors will be determined at the end of their 7th semester. Using the Fall 2019 cumulative GPA as the class rank determination will ensure that students are not negatively impacted by current circumstances.

latest information
Right now, public health officials have made it clear it's not safe to gather students in one place. Many states have closed their schools for the rest of the academic year, and globally there are widespread school closures across 192 countries. As such, we won't be able to administer the SAT® and SAT Subject Tests™ as planned on June 6, 2020.
We'll ensure that you and all students have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring's lost administrations. If it's safe from a public health standpoint, we'll provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. This includes a new administration in September, in addition to the previously scheduled tests.
In the unlikely event that schools don't reopen this fall, the College Board will provide a digital SAT for home use, much as we're delivering digital exams for three million Advanced Placement® students this spring. As we're doing with at-home AP® Exams, we would ensure that at-home SAT testing is simple; secure and fair; accessible to all; and valid for use in college admissions.
We're committed to giving you as many chances as we can to show your strengths to admissions officers. As we navigate this evolving situation, we're working closely with our partners in higher education to ensure you have what you need as you continue on your path to college.
We'll regularly update our website with new information. Thank you for your understanding. Our thoughts are with you during this unprecedented time.
Sincerely,
College Board

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams: National Testing Information
Administered on Each High School Campus
March 20, 2020, from College Board--As schools and communities navigate the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the health and safety of educators and students are the AP Program’s top priorities. Here is how the College Board is supporting schools:
Providing free remote learning resources
Investing in the development of a new at-home testing option
The solutions the College Board is providing is meant to be as simple and lightweight as possible for both students and teachers--without creating additional burdens for any stakeholders during this time.
Traditional face-to-face exam administrations will NOT take place for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Some students may want to take their AP exam(s) sooner rather than later, there will be two (2) different testing dates identified (not yet determined).
The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP Exam, and additional testing details will be available by April 3, 2020.
The College Board will unlock any relevant free-response questions in AP Classroom for digital use so students may access all practice questions of the type that will appear on the upcoming exams.
The AP Program will invest heavily over the next weeks in the following ways:
For the 2019-2020 AP Exam Administration only, students can take a 45-minute online exam AT HOME. These exams are currently being developed.
In order to accommodate students across the nation, the AP Exam will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class instruction by early March.
Colleges support this solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked this school year to earn. Historically, colleges and universities have accepted a shortened AP Exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies.
Students will be able to take the streamlined, online AP Exams on any device they have access to--computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.
The College Board recognizes these digital AP Exams could cause some inequities and access issues for some low-income and rural students. Working with community partners, the College Board will invest so that all students have the tools and connectivity necessary to review AP content and take the online exam. Students who need mobile tools or support with connectivity may reach out directly to the College Board.
Test security is a concern for the College Board.
The exam questions are designed and administered in ways that prevent cheating. The College Board uses a range of digital security tools and techniques, including plagiarism detection software, to protect the integrity of the exams.
Scoring at-home work for an AP Exam is not new to the AP Program. Historically, the AP Program has received and scored at-home student work as part of the exams for the AP Computer Science Principles and AP Capstone courses.
March 16, 2020, from College Board--The AP Program is developing resources to help schools support student learning during extended closures, as well as a solution that would allow students to test at home, depending on the situation in May 2020. Additional information will be posted.

STAY ACTIVE AND HEALTHY CAMPO VERDE! WE MISS YOU ALL!
A Message from Coach Cornell
TIPS FOR WELLNESS...(Especially during these stressful times).......
1). MOVE "every day"! ( be sure to get outside and be active) You will feel so much better!
2). Increase your FRUIT & VEGETABLE intake (vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, essentials).
3). CREATE A DAILY ROUTINE (healthy habits, eating schedule, limit snacking, healthy eating).
4). MENTAL HEALTH:
a). Good sleep habits (relaxing before bed): cut off screen time 1 hour before, clean sheets,
comfortable PJ's, cool temperature in room, and most importantly relaxing thoughts.
Don't try to solve problems in your head.... if you think of something, let it move on...it
will still be there for you to solve the next day.
b). Focus on your "CONTROLLABLES" or what you can control....let the other stuff go!
c). Limit screen time (you will be happier, have more energy, and feel better overall).
d). Don't Isolate yourself (communicate with others and reach out for help).
5. REMEMBER, THIS SITUATION IS TEMPORARY... THIS WILL PASS! Smile and be thankful
for all of your MANY blessings.
STRESS INFORMATION:
1. Stress affects EVERYONE!
-Some may cope more effectively and recover more quickly.
-Stress may be short term or occurrences that continue over time.
-3 Types of Stress: 1). ROUTINE STRESS (every day work, school. etc. 2). TRAUMATIC STRESS (accident, disaster, death, injury, etc) 3). SUDDEN CHANGE STRESS: Stress brought on by sudden negative change (job loss, divorce, illness)
2. Not all stress is bad!
-Can motivate people to perform at their best or "rise to the occasion" (high achieving people feel stress).
-Can be "life saving" in times of danger (brain more "wired in").
3. Long term stress can harm health
-Chronic / long term stress can damage the immune system, digestion, sleep, and reproductive issues.
-Headaches, sleeplessness, sadness, anger, irritable behavior.
-If Long term stress occurs heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and mental disorders can develop.
4. MANAGING STRESS
1. Recognize the signs of stress.
2. GET HELP! Talk to a health care provider.
3. Regular EXERCISE!
4. Relaxing activities (yoga, tai chi, gentle exercises)
5. Set PRIORITIES (what must get done and what can wait).... You don't have to do everything at once!
6. Stay connected to FRIENDS and FAMILY that can provide support and help!

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent state response, all spring AMEA events have been cancelled. As a result, students who made regionals were unable to audition and participate in the AMEA State All-State Festival and Symphonic Strings was unable to participate in the AMEA All-State Concert Festival. However, we commend these students for excelling in their music studies!
Congratulations to our Strolling pianist Kylie Smith (sophomore) on her original composition being chosen to be featured at the Yamaha Junior Original Composition National Concert held in Boston in May. Here are some topics for you and your teen to discuss to make sure they are handling their webex meetings appropriately:
Where is an appropriate place for you to be when you are video conferencing for school? Consider distractions and where other family members are. Broadcasting from the bedroom is a little intimate for a class setting. If they must, help them carve out a space where they can have peace and quiet but that doesn't convey too many personal details.
Do you know how to mute audio and video? When is it appropriate to do those things?
How do you participate during video conferences? Discuss with your teen if they are expected to submit information in the chat feature for each class? Are they expected to speak verbally or are they muted by their teachers in their classes?
Review the GPS Remote Learning Guidelines together.
