Comet Connection (3/17/23)
CHS School Counseling
Greetings Comets!
Wrapping up Q3 (UPDATE)
The 3rd Marking Period ends on Friday, March 24th. If you have any outstanding or make-up assignments, please work with teachers to ensure things are completed before their deadlines. Putting in the extra effort now can prevent you from needing to attend summer school or repeating the entire class next year. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!!
Celebrating Our Seniors
Did you know the Class of 2023 has already been accepted to more than 60 different colleges and received over $4.5 million in scholarships? In reality, both of these numbers are much higher. That's only counting the 1/4 of seniors that have actually shared their admissions letters!!
If you have not already shared copies of your decision letters and scholarship awards, please do so as soon as possible. You can either bring the physical documents into our office (we'll make a copy for our records) or email them to Ms. Leonard (kleonard@bcps.org).
Whether you've gotten into 1 college or 15, have committed to one of the service branches, or were accepted into a skilled trade program, this is a really big deal! We look forward to celebrating these accomplishments with each of you.

Upcoming College & Military Rep Visits
We're continuing to schedule visits with reps from different colleges, trade programs, and military branches throughout the spring. Students can login to their Naviance account to view upcoming schools and register for individual visits. This is a great opportunity for all students to learn more about different post-grad options. Space is limited for each session, so don't wait!
ASVAB (4/28/23)
We've coordinated another school-based administration of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) on Friday, April 28th. All 10th, 11th, and 12th graders are encouraged to sign up. There is NO OBLIGATION to speak with a recruiter or pursue military enlistment for students taking this exam. This is a great opportunity for anyone thinking about a career in the military, or any students that simply want to further explore their post-secondary options.
To participate, students must return their permission slip to the CHS School Counseling Office by 4/20.
Summer Youth Employment Program (Baltimore County)
Applications for the 2023 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) are now open. Interested students must apply before April 7, 2023.
The SYEP program offers youth ages 14-21 the opportunity to work up to 25 hours each week for a six-week period beginning Monday, July 3, 2023.
Applicants must be Baltimore County residents. Interviews will be coordinated with local employers, and those youth selected for jobs will earn $15.00/hour.
Please note: applying to the program does not guarantee a job placement.

Interested in Dual Enrollment Next Year?
See the attached documents for more details on the specific steps for CHS students. These materials can also be found in the CHS School Counseling (Schoology) group.
Students can begin registering for Summer/Fall classes on March 27th, provided all prerequisites have been met.
We cannot add any college-level classes to student schedules until BOTH of the following documents are submitted to the School Counseling Office. This must occur before students begin the class/term.
- DUAL CREDIT AGREEMENT FORM (LINK) – Signed by both student and guardian
- PROOF OF COURSE ENROLLMENT (ex. Copy of CCBC schedule from student account) – This should include the student’s full name, course info, and section details (meeting days, meeting times, instructor, etc.)
Upcoming CCR Lessons (11th & 10th Grade)
School Counselors will begin holding 11th grade Post-Grad Planning lessons during the week of March 27th. Along with visiting English 11 classes, we’ll schedule an extra session for students that completed English at CCBC. These lessons will:
- Provide a brief overview of post-secondary options,
- Help students utilize available tools to assist with their college search.
- Walk students through an overview of the college application steps,
- Explain the responsibilities of students and counselors, and
- Review how to effectively use Naviance throughout the search and application process.
We will also begin to deliver CCR lessons to 10th grade English classrooms in late-April/May. These will include a walk-through of the Naviance "Career Interest Profiler" and other related activities. More specific details will be shared shortly.
6 Year Plan Meetings & Reviewing Course Selections
Throughout the year, each Catonsville High School student holds a 1-on-1 meeting with their School Counselor to review/update their 6 Year Plan and course requests (if applicable). This process starts by identifying the student’s unique interests and aspirations, and includes a collaborative review of their personal goals to ensure that they are set up for a timely graduation and post-secondary success. Counselors are continuing to meet with their remaining 9th and 10th graders through spring.
Revisions to the student’s course requests may be made, as appropriate, based on these conferences. However, this is not simply a "scheduling meeting" to finalize next year's classes. Please note that registration for the selected courses does not guarantee enrollment. We will do our best to provide each student with the courses they have selected; however, occasional conflicts arise, and can result in changes to a student’s final schedule in August.
Families can view prospective 2023-2024 classes by logging into the FOCUS Portal. We encourage parents/guardians to review and discuss these course selections with their students, and to contact their school counselor with any related questions.
Mental Health Resources
Whether you reach out to a parent, coach, teacher, school counselor, or religious leader, a trusted adult can help you figure out what’s next. Mental health services and supports are available, so there's no need to feel like you're alone on an island. Never be afraid to ask for help! That's what we're here for.
