Character is Super! BF Celebrates Kids of Character!
At the end of October--the month Ben Franklin focused on the character trait, respect--one student from each class was chosen as a Kid of Character. "Mega M" and "Super G" helped us recognize these students for their consistent demonstration of respect in the classroom and in the school community. Congratulations Kids of Character! Character is Super! You have a lot to be proud of!
Self-Control: The Character Trait of the Month
For children in Kindergarten through third grade self-control is defined as the ability to control one's words and actions. Examples of self-control in the classroom include listening without speaking, keeping hands and feet still, following directions, and raising one's hand rather than calling-out.
Some ideas for teaching self-control follow:
- Role-play with your child about how he/she would to talk to a younger brother or sister who is demonstrating a lack of self-control.
- Model self-control and make children aware of when you are using it (e.g., "Mommy would love to eat three more of these cookies. But that would not be a healthy choice. So I am going to stop after eating only one.)
- Stick to the same homework routine every day (e.g., "Before you can play outside, you know you will need to finish your homework.")
- Find pictures in magazines, newspapers, etc. that demonstrate self-control. Create a mobile or collage from the pictures and discuss how self-control is being used in them.
