Three Levels of Reading: Stargirl

Analyzing Stargirl through three levels of reading

Level 1: Reading on the line

My word: Elusive

"She was elusive." pg.15

Definitions:

1. Hard to find or capture.

2. Hard to comprehend or define.

Explanation:

Elusive describes Stargirl perfectly because she does and says everything in her own way. Since she is so unique, it is hard to find someone similar to her. Her elusiveness made people avoid her in the beginning but they soon learn to love and accept her.

Level 2: Reading between the Lines

She wore no makeup, and her eyes were the biggest I have ever seen. pg.5

Mostly everyone in the school wears makeup, but Stargirl doesn't. Her eyes are also very big.

Level Three: Reading beyond the Lines

Thematic Statement #1:

The main thematic statement of Stargirl is to make yourself stand out from others and make yourself someone with a different way of seeing things. Jerry Spinelli is trying to show the reader that your differences make you special.

Thematic Statement #2:

The second thematic statement of Stargirl is to accept your differences and not be afraid to stand out. The author is trying to show that being different is not a bad thing and sometimes normal is, well... boring
