Spotlight On .. . . .Mrs. McHugh's 1st Grade classroom!
I am Beth McHugh.
I have been teaching Kindergarten or First Grade for over 32 years now. I taught at Worthington Park and Slate Hill. I never wanted to do anything else growing up other than be a teacher. It is my lifelong dream.
A special tidbit: I had the privilege of opening Slate Hill in 1990. That was way back when Slate Hill was known to be the "school in the middle of a corn field." Lots of things have changed since then, but I still think it is the most amazing school ever! And I look forward to coming to the Slate everyday.
My favorite thing about teaching First Grade is to watch the students grow to be independent learners. I love when students come to school ready to make their brains bigger everyday. It is in those magical moments when a student's face lights up when they realize they discovered something new on their own or got better at a new skill are my favorites. I take much pride in their independence and hard work.
Right now in First Grade, we are focusing on a Geography Unit that will lead to our Informational Penguin Unit of Study. It is quite a tradition at Slate Hill for our First Graders to become penguin experts. I look forward to another fun time teaching and learning about these interesting birds.
So far this year, First Graders have really enjoyed getting to know each other through our daily morning meetings that include special greetings, sharing and class games. They really like to play the game 4 corners. It is a great way to start out our day and get to know each other. Building our classroom community is so important to our success as learners.

Spring Book Fair!
Book Fair Volunteers Needed!
Hello! The book fair is just around the corner (February 4th - February 11th), and we are looking for book fair volunteers to help set up and tear down the book fair, as well as to help students shop for and pick out amazing books (and, occasionally, erasers and pencils) when their class gets to visit! This is especially helpful during the before-school rush and the lunch/recess time when any student may visit the book fair, but we also have some after-school spots available if that works better with your schedule! To see what dates/times are available (and to sign up, if you want!), go to this website:
Thank you so, so much for considering giving your time to help out our students (and staff!) during the most hectic days in the school library; I really, really appreciate it.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at ckochensparger@wscloud.org
Love from,
Mx. Kochensparger,
Slate Hill Librarian :)

Counselor's Corner
January is a great month to set goals for the upcoming year and to look back on all that we accomplished in the previous year (even if that is just making it through the year)! Below in the eBackpack you can find a fun activity that you can do with the whole family as well as the 7 Habits of a Positive Parent, which may help you think of some goals of your own!
Below you can also find my presentation that I gave at the PTA meeting on 1/13/2022 . It has tips about homework time and executive functioning skills.
