LS Weekly Update 12.2.2022
FINAL 2 WEEKS OF Q2 + SPIRIT DAYS + GIVING + MORE
WELCOME BACK + HAPPY DECEMBER!
We've had a fantastic week back after Thanksgiving Break. As you've seen in eblasts, teacher newsletters, and our social media pages, we've already had a lot of activity this week and will have a busy last two weeks before we head into Winter Break.
In the next two weeks our staff will continue gathering mid-year benchmark and end-of-quarter data to assess current progress and plan for next steps when we return in January. Additionally, students are expected to be checking their PowerSchool grades weekly to ensure they have all assignments completed and are up-to-date with work and retakes in preparation for grades closing Friday, Dec. 16 @ 9:00AM.
This means it is very important to have all students on campus the next two weeks, unless your children are ill as we know cold and flu season is in full effect. As we've been sharing in previous eblasts, attendance is critical for student success.

TSMC FAMILY UPDATES - WELCOME NEW LEOPARDS
We finished our week welcoming another group of families from TSMC! We have two more groups touring and joining our campus between now and January 3rd, and it's been a wonderful experience for the new students and our students on campus. We are so proud of our staff and students for embracing diversity and challenging each other to grow academically and socially through new friendships and community.
We will continue to provide information about TSMC in our newsletter through the month of December and January as we welcome new families from TSMC and other areas in the valley, recognizing the great honor it is to be chosen as a school that stands out for excelling academics and opportunities for all students.
TSMC Info:
As you may be aware, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is developing a large fabrication facility in North Phoenix (off I-17 & Loop 303) within the boundaries of Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD). TSMC will hire hundreds of local staff members and is also bringing employees and their families from their main location in Taiwan. Families began arriving in Arizona this summer and many more will join us this fall.
One of the reasons TSMC chose to locate their new U.S. facility in North Phoenix is because they recognize DVUSD has outstanding schools, teachers, and programs. TSMC families have researched DVUSD and are excited about what our schools offer for their children. In fact, students are already registered at more than 15 different schools across DVUSD.
During this school year, LS expects to welcome approximately 35 students from TSMC families. Prior to arriving in Arizona, these families researched our campus and purposefully chose Legend Springs as the place they want their students to learn and grow. One TSMC chief officer shared with all principals just how impressed the company has been with the rigor, creativity, and experiences our students have in DVUSD.
Our staff have been preparing to welcome our new students and families to the LS community since last year, and continue to engage in professional development to support our students academically, socially, and culturally. The strategies learned to support English Language Learners (ELL) are great for all students! Information is being shared with our current students to help provide background about Taiwan culture and the Mandarin language. You can check out the Culture Presentation here to learn more about these students and talk about this with your child. We know it can be difficult for students to start at a new school, especially in a new country. We want to welcome these students as we would want our own students to be welcomed if they moved to a new country, with a different culture and language.
Each school welcoming these families have set up tours and school visits for families prior to their student’s first day of school. Our administration and ELL team is assisting with the transition by helping with student and family tours, and our 6th grade student leader Welcome Crew has been assigned partner students to assist with the first days transitioning to LS.
If your child is interested in being a buddy for one of our new students or you would like to find a way to assist with the family’s transitions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school’s front office.
We feel fortunate to have such a welcoming, wonderful school community for these families and look forward to growing our Legend Springs community this year and many more to follow.

DVUSD SOCIAL STUDIES & MUSIC CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS
Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) is currently in the process of reviewing materials for a Social Studies and Music Curriculum Materials Adoption for grades K-12. The curriculum adoption team has selected a number of potential resources for our K-12 students and teachers. Materials are now available for public review and will remain available until January 2, 2023.
Please visit the K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Materials Adoption page (https://www.dvusd.org/ssadoption22) for additional information and to provide feedback.
Please visit the K-12 Music Curriculum Materials Adoption page (https://www.dvusd.org/musicadoption22) for additional information and to provide feedback.
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL REMINDERS
Also-- no students will be released after 3:15PM from the office. If you arrive to pick up your child early to avoid traffic lines you will have to wait until the Kinder release (3:20) or 1st-6th release (3:30) to get your child. This minimizes classroom disruptions and ensures students are completing their full day of learning.
PRIORITY OPEN ENROLLMENT 23-24 REMINDER
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. Initial open enrollment applications should be submitted by December 5, 2022.
If you have a child starting school next year (any grade) and have a sibling who currently attends our school on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 5, 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Legend Springs, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend LS next year, it is essential that you submit an application ASAP prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist the majority of students applying after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online within 10 days of receiving the acceptance notification. Otherwise, the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and will be removed from the waitlist, needing to reapply if still interested.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4500.
WHAT HAPPENS ON EARLY RELEASE FRIDAYS?
Early Release Friday
The majority of our Fridays are 2:00PM release days in DVUSD. These days are reserved for our campus Professional Learning Communities and Staff Development for our DVUSD staff. These 90-minute early release days offer teachers and staff the time for collaboration and planning throughout the district in order to enhance the education offered district-wide and offer the best learning experience for our students. These early release Fridays will occur most Fridays, with some exceptions. View the instructional calendar for more information. Visit the start and dismiss page to find out when your child’s school releases during those dates.
