Progressive Era
The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890's to 1920. It was a time of political reform. It was also a period of widespread social activism.
Child Labor
During this time child labor was a very big issue. Children worked all day for hardly no pay and horrible working conditions. In the year of 1890 more than one million children worked in factories in the US. These children's ages ranged from 10 to 15 years old.
Women Rights
This time period is very important for the history of women. Women had protests, were arrested, and went on hunger strikes for trying to get the same rights as men. Women were tired of being housewives and also wanted the right to vote! They worked hard and eventually got what they deserved.
Temperance Movement
Many women were against the use of alcohol. They believed that alcohol increased the chances of having violence in their homes. The temperance movement outlawed alcohol for about 15 years.
The Jungle
The Jungle was written by Upton Sinclair. The Jungle exposed how nasty our meat and where it was made was. At this time many people would get sick because of our meat and the conditions that it was kept in. Upton Sinclair is the reason why our meat and food in general is better taken care of.
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
This fire killed 146 women. The shirts that were made there were 100% cotton because of this everything caught fire very quickly. The doors were locked from the outside and that is why so many people were killed.
