Teacher Appreciation Week Challenge
SMS has a wonderful staff and ALL of them are devoted to helping you learn. Take time this week to thank them for teaching YOU!
Team Pentathlon May 30th
The inaugural SMS Team Pentathlon will be held from 3:30-6:00 P.M. that night. Teams of six students will each compete in five different events. The events are Homerun Derby, Corn Hole, Hot Shots, Trivial Matters, and Flipping Relay. Events will test brains, teamwork, and some unusual physical skills.
Pentathlon teams must register by May 26 in the SMS office. Forms are in the office. Pentathletes will be able to enjoy the karaoke and games between events. Admission to the event is $5 per person. Pentathlon teams pay when they turn in entry forms. All other student and parent spectators will pay $5 at the door. Light refreshments will be available.
Gather your friends. Get a team name. Decide on team attire. And register for the SMS Team Pentathlon!

Spring Pictures are Ready!
If you sat for a photo last month, you can review your photo packet either tomorrow or Wednesday in the Great Room during lunch. Lunch monitors will dismiss students to the Great Room by table. Ftake a good look at your packet.
If you like your packet, you can sign for it and take it home to show parents/guardians. If you do not like your packet, leave it in the Great Room.
Signing for a packet means that you are taking on the responsibility of returning the packet or paying for the packet.
- If your parent/guardian doesn't like the packet, bring the entire packet back and sign it in at the return station.
- If your parent wants all of the packet, put your payment in the money envelope and turn the envelope in at the return station (make checks payable to Lifetouch.) If your parent/guardian pays online, put the online payment invoice number on the money envelope and bring it to the return station.
- If your parent/guardian wants some of the pictures, return the unwanted pictures and the money for the wanted pictures!
If you take responsibility for a packet, payment or return is expected. The return station (for pictures or money) is in the main hall under the Warrior Window and will be open from 7:45 to 8:05 daily from May 4th to May 15th. Monday, May 15th is the LAST DAY to turn in your money or your packet. Students that fail to be responsible for their packets will be restricted from their teaching team year-end bash. Be responsible!!! Thanks!
Hat Day Friday
The Kentucky Oaks and Derby races aren't the only places where people wear cool hats this weekend! The SMS Destination Imagination team is sponsoring a Hat Day on Friday, May 5th. They will be offering hat permits for a $1 donation. Proceeds will help cover costs of the team competing at the DI Globals in Knoxville, TN later this month. All staff and students are invited to participate.
SMS Bond Refinance Plans
At last week's meeting, the board approved some projects that will take place this summer.
- The SMS office will get a safety redesign. The existing reception desk will be dismantled and a new reception desk will be placed up against the entry door wall. We will install a 'pass through' window at the front door, reducing the number of patrons that actually enter the school. Besides the pass-through window and the new reception station, the office will also be re-carpeted and re-painted.
- All current SMS MacBooks will be replaced. Carts will be fitted with brand new Macs and chargers.
- Warrior field will get new bleachers. Home side will expand to 1000 seats and all current home bleachers will be relocated to the visitor side.
- The athletic building will be reconfigured to expand public restrooms.
- We will add fencing along the SMS driveway to separate the road from the soccer field (and softball field.)
- In addition to things on our campus, we also will be working on roofing and HVAC for the Office of Special Education and the old WHEMS cafeteria on Third Street.
Several other items are on our list that we hope to approve soon! We're planning to double the size of our back parking lot, add new science equipment for 6-7-8, and add a 'drop down curtain' that allows us to have two athletic practices in the main gym at one time. In the future, we also plan to re-carpet SMS classrooms, re-paint SMS halls and classrooms, upgrade floor care equipment, and upgrade the presentation infrastructure in the Great Room.
We are very excited about these possibilities and thank the community for supporting SMS!
