SHARK MAIL

Friday Message:

Happy Friday, Sharks!

It was a terrific week here at Lakeside with three events after school. We had two amazing choir performances from the 6th, 7th, 8th, and combined choirs. Thank you to all who turned out for an in-person event! And thank you to Ms. Walkup and our choir students for doing such an outstanding job. Thursday night, the counseling department hosted an evening discussion on understanding the psychology and brain development for middle school students. An update on that is below for folks who missed it.

Next week is a short week as we head to Thanksgiving break. The calendar below is reflective of the next two weeks as there will not be a newsletter next week. The week we come back has school picture day make-up sessions on Wednesday, an Orchestra concert on Thursday, and an ICA day schedule on that Friday. We do have one important family meeting on November 30th at 6:00 PM for all 6th and 7th-grade families. This meeting is where we discuss the upcoming registration process for current LMS students and review exploratory options for next year. Stay tuned for a Zoom invite. 8th-grade families will have a separate email regarding that registration process.

That's all for now, Sharks. Take care and have a great weekend, a great Thanksgiving, and a great time on break!

Did You Know...that yearbooks are already on sale? Check out the LMS website for a link to the purchase page and search out "Lakeside Middle School" in Charlottesville (there are multiple Lakeside Middle Schools, so make sure you look for Charlottesville).

Family Engagement Series:

A huge thank you to the families who joined us on Thursday evening for the presentation on Understanding the Teenage Brain. We are posting the video and the slide deck on a new page found under the Counseling section of the website. That can be accessed here. Part of our goal this year is to offer sessions once a month based on the feedback we received at Open House at the start of the year.

We have also created a feedback form for those who were able to attend. If you have a moment to fill it out, that would be very helpful. There is also a place for future topic suggestions.

For a list of topics coming soon, please check out the website and stay tuned for more details in future Shark Mails.

News from Lakeside:

  1. Support the Lakeside PTO by Feeding the Shark! Your tax-deductible donation will go to teacher appreciation, supplies, and so much more!

  2. LOST and FOUND: Our lost and found corner is overflowing. All items will be taken to GoodWill (or purged in the case of water bottles and lunchboxes). Please have students check the collection in the cafeteria by Tuesday.

  3. The Community Lab School has opened its admissions process for school year 2022-23 for all rising 6-9th grade students. Admission to the Community Lab School is through a lottery process. The lottery will remain open until January 28, 2022 at 5:00pm.

The Community Lab School’s goal is “to ignite and nurture an enduring spirit of scholarship, curiosity, creativity, and confidence. We value community, learning experientially, exhibiting kindness, and honoring diversity.”

  4. Beginning November 29th – December 15th, CHOMP’s will be collecting items to donate to Shelter for Help in Emergency & The Haven for the Winter season. This will be a CHOMPETITION in which the homeroom with the most amount of whole items (i.e. a pack of toilet paper versus one role) will receive a prize. Please consider donating items to help our local shelters as they prepare for a cold and wintery season. If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Goolsby or Ms. Walkup. Attached below is a list of the donation items that are preferred by the shelters.
