October is Disability Awareness Month
Additionally, a variety of resources can be found on the Office of Programs for Exceptional Children webpage on the Intranet under the Disability History and Awareness Month link on the left side of the page. Some of these resources may be familiar to you. Of particular note is a compilation of children’s literature and suggested morning announcements to share with your school community on the contributions of individuals with disabilities. A wealth of additional resources can also be found on The Special Olympics of Virginia’s website at the following URL addresses: http://specialolympicsva.org/programs/school-based-programs/ and https://getintoit.specialolympics.org/.
#WhatLiftsYou mural created by 1st-5th grade students
This collaborative artwork was inspired by international street artist/muralist Kelsey Montague, famed for her winged murals that invite the viewer to become a 'living work of art' and share what inspires them on social media. Take your picture and your students' pictures in front of the mural and share on social media with the hashtags #WhatLiftsYou and #LionPride. Share the photos with your students' families! This can also become a great writing prompt. After posing for their photos, students can write about what "lifts" them, what inspires them.
Kelsey has been commissioned by the city of Norfolk to paint 3 murals in the Macarthur Center area!

PBIS - GRRR Code
Please take some time to look at the graphs below for the month of September. A couple of graphs have a few days referrals from the beginning of October (if you are comparing numbers).
What do you see? Especially take a look at our referral rate for different race/ethnicities. Are we in line with our school demographics?
What about our boys? What ideas do you have to help our boys? For the month of October, let's beef our behavior specific praise for boys and see what data we have at the end of the month.
