Rankin Elementary News
One Town One School One Goal
September, 2019
Rankin is a wonderful place where students experience personal growth and success through the positive support of faculty, parents, and the community.
Have You Heard the GREAT News?
Rankin Elementary is now a 'B' School!!
We are so proud of this accomplishment. Our staff, students and community work hard every single day to make Rankin the best school on Earth! It's nice to receive this wonderful school grade. We couldn't do it without you! WE ARE ONE!!
Gaston Gazette (Sept. 5): Schools have each been assigned an A to F letter grade based primarily on overall proficiency rates on the state’s standardized end-of-year tests and the growth students make during the year.
Eighty percent of the grade is for the percentage of tests earning a score considered grade-level proficient, and 20 percent is for growth, measured by a statistical model that compares each student’s predicted test score, based on past performance, against the student’s actual result.
Academic growth indicates whether students achieve a year’s worth of academic progress for a year’s worth of instruction. Growth is reported in one of three ways: exceeded growth, met growth, or did not meet growth.
Superintendent, Dr. Booker, said the school performance grade should not be interpreted as a comprehensive evaluation that determines the quality of a school because factors such as school size, diverse student population, socioeconomics, teacher experience, student learning obstacles, special programs, and parental and community involvement have an effect on a school’s performance, but are not considered in the grade.
Curriculum Night
Thank you for a wonderful curriculum night on Thursday, Sept. 19. We had a great show of support and enjoyed seeing all the families spending time in classrooms to see what a day in the life of their child is like. We hope you enjoyed your evening. Mark your calendars for the remaining nights to come learn with your family:
- Dec. 12
- Feb. 6
- April 2

Gaston Together is proud to offer the “Pride in Gaston” Traveling Tour field trip for the third graders once again this year. Over the past 20 years more than 43,500 third graders have been exposed to new and exciting places that instill pride in Gaston County, and we look forward to working with this year’s group of students.
This year the traveling tour took our third graders to Holy Angels in Belmont, The Schiele Museum in Gastonia, and The Gaston County Museum of Art & History in Dallas.
As always, our Rankin students were recognized for having wonderful behavior and high student engagement! Thank you to our fantastic 3rd grade teachers and students.

PTA Corner
We have had an amazing start to the new school year! Our Rankin PTA is currently 112 members strong and growing. We are fortunate to have a wonderful group of families, teachers, and staff at Rankin that are dedicated to providing an exceptional learning environment for our students. PTA plays an essential role in supporting our school and our students. In the past, the PTA has made contributions to fund important projects at our school, such as, new playground equipment, classroom libraries and technology upgrades.
Our Fall fundraising efforts have been very successful. The Fall Fundraiser sold over $40,000. WOW! Thank you to all who participated. Fall Fundraiser items will be shipped out in the near future. Stay tuned for more details.
Congratulations to Mrs. Williams’s 2nd Grade Class, who won our PTA Membership drive and have the most members in class! They will celebrate this with a donut party!
If you would like to join our PTA or have any questions/suggestions/ ideas, please reach out and let us know. Our email address is rankinelementarypta@gmail.com. Also, please like our Ida Rankin Elementary PTA page on Facebook for up to date school and PTA information.
