WBMS Friday Notes
Oct 10-13
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS parents and guardians –
Every week I discover more fully what a wonderful place WBMS truly is! This week, like usual, I observed memorable events: joy and laughter during “Connect” advisory, delight as students tasted root beer they made during a fermentation lab, singing and cooking in Chinese, teamwork during the volleyball match, beautiful music at the orchestra concert, creativity in general music, goodness and compassion as three eighth graders left inspirational messages for every sixth grader, love and support during our PINK OUT (SO MUCH PINK), and lastly focus and determination during morning help sessions. Our classrooms are busy, busy, busy early each day with teachers and students getting a head start on learning. Teachers develop lessons and extra practice for skills with which students are struggling. If your student is not taking advantage of our morning help sessions, I would encourage him or her to do so. Here is a list of the days we offer extra assistance to all students:
- Mondays: Connections, Language Arts, World Language, and Reading
- Tuesdays: NONE
- Wednesdays: Social Studies
- Thursday: Math
- Friday: Science
Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy your time with your family!
In collaboration,
Rebecca Williams Perkins
Principal, Webb Bridge Middle School

Welcome Officer Ritchey and Raider!
Hello Webb Bridge Middle School Jaguars!
My name is Officer Phil Ritchey. I am a Police Officer with the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. I am the Youth Investigator and the Handler for our newest Police Officer, K9 Raider! Raider is a 2-year-old black Labrador and she weighs in at a whopping 35 pounds. Raider is the Community Service Youth Drug Prevention K9.
Raider has an important job in our community. Raider will be enhancing communications with the police and our youth. Raider will be visible at all Alpharetta schools, but will focus on Alpharetta High School, Webb Bridge Middle School and Haynes Bridge Middle School. Raider is here for you and you can pet her whenever you want! Her main goal in the middle school level is to make friends with the students, which will lead to a positive relationship with the police.
K9 Raider is also trained in narcotics detection. Raider will be ensuring all Alpharetta schools are a drug free learning environment. Raider is a single purpose K9, meaning she is only trained in narcotics and obedience. She is much different from our Patrol K9’s who are trained in apprehension, tracking and narcotics.
Raider is very excited to meet all of the Webb Bridge Jaguars! Raider will be continuing her training for the next 2-4 weeks and she will be ready for our community!
Thank you,
Officer P. Ritchey

Attendance Myths
Research-based from the Department of Education
Does it really matter if my child misses a few extra days each year? Here is one of the myth’s about student attendance.
Missing a few days of school each year is normal and doesn’t matter that much.
- Data indicate that missing more than five days of school each year, regardless of the cause, impacts student academic performance and starts shaping attitudes about school.
- From the 6th grade through the 9th grade, student attendance is a better predictor of dropping out than standardized test scores.
- Excused absences and unexcused absences have similar impact on student academic performance.
Thank you for helping to prioritize daily school attendance.

Helping Florida
Alpharetta High School and Webb Bridge Middle School are teaming up again to lead what we hope will become another community-wide effort! The Hurricane Harvey fundraiser was a huge success at both AHS and WBMS and we are confident that was only just the beginning! From now through Friday, October 20th both schools will be accepting donations of baby & adult diapers, NEW t-shirts and socks, & toiletries. At that point, all gathered donations will be shipped to Our Father’s Housewares, a charity located in Atlantic Beach, FL. Donations can be dropped off at the front office. Monetary donations will also be accepted online at www.tinyurl.com/ahshelpsFlorida2017. The money collected will be used to pay for shipping the donated items to Florida. Any remaining money will then be donated to hurricane relief efforts. We sincerely thank you for your continued generosity and altruism.

Please Support PTA
Dear Jaguar Families,
Thank you very much to the families who donated towards our WBMS Fall Donation Drive last week. We added $685 towards our goal, but we are still short $6,725 of our $30,000 goal.
If you haven't donated towards the PTA as yet, please consider doing so. It's not too late to donate and we do not want to cut any of the Student Enrichment programs we provide at Webb Bridge. Our teachers are eagerly awaiting their mini-grant awards, but we are unable to fully award them until we meet our goal. Please click here to donate today.
Thank you very much for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Cindy Garcia and Kristen Vance (WBMS PTA Presidents)
Meetings and Public Comment
Webb Bridge’s School Governance Council meets in the morning one Friday each month in room 116; our next meeting is October 20th @ 7:30 in the PLR room. We hold a Public Comment period starting at 8:10 AM. Please feel free to attend and help us start our planning! If you cannot come to issue public comments, please fill out the form below.
What is SGC?
The Webb Bridge School Governance Council is already hard at work this year. When Fulton County became a Charter System, School Governance Councils were created to reflect the stakeholders for each school – faculty, parents, and community members. The School Governance Council concentrates on the culture, identity, and mission of Webb Bridge and are tasked with creating the Strategic Plan for our school. As the district Strategic Plan was updated this summer, this fall the School Governance Council will be working on creating our new, updated Strategic Plan for Webb Bridge.
