Woods Weekly
Week of January 4th-8th
Classroom Happenings
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It's hard to believe that it is already time for our holiday break! I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing, and fun-filled holiday! Please take a look to see what we will be doing when we return in 2016.
Reminders
- Accelerated Reader will count as two test scores this grading period. One grade will be for reaching the point goal. The other will be for reading comprehension accuracy. Our grading period ends on January 14th, so students still have a little time left to reach their goal.
Science
- motion
- speed
- friction
Social Studies
Math
- Dividing objects into groups
- interpreting the remainder
- dividing money
We will utilize the story "A Remainder of One" to begin this portion of the unit. This story involves a group of bug soldiers who are told to divide in order to form different formations; students will model these formations with their tile pieces. We will then move into discussing how to handle remainders; sometimes, it's okay to leave the remainder as a whole number while other times we need to divide it up further to get a fraction. Students will also play a couple of math games that will allow them to practice division.
Reading
- Comparing and Contrasting
- Determining Text Importance
On Friday, students will take a short test over comparing and contrasting.
Writing
Spelling: Words with "w" or /w/ sound before the vowel
Students will be tested over all 10 Core Words. Then, I will choose 10 of the Test Words to give them on Friday. For the last word, students have to write the sentence that I say using the spelling word. I take a writing score for their sentence based on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
***It is very important that students spend some time each night practicing their spelling words.***
