February 2016 Student Portfolio

English 7

The students read a challenging historical novel, set in Beijing during the time of Kublai Khan, and wrote synopses of each chapter. They have begun a longer-term project of composing and performing an original puppet show based in traditional folklore. Of all the activities in English class, Adam continues to enjoy writing most. He is an alert and independent student, with a desire to excel. He strives to finish assignments ahead of time, but I encourage him to take advantage of the time allotted to polish something. Since most of the work we do is open-ended, he always benefits from using class time to add more of his individuality to his assignments.

Social Studies

This unit's focus was ancient China: its history, culture, philosophies, and arts. Two arts the students tried their hands at were traditional puppet-making and calligraphy. The class is proud to have a foundation in the geography of China and all of its neighbors. Adam has demonstrated excellent comprehension of the topics we've explored in Ancient Cultures class. He is an independent individual as well as a good partner in teamwork. He works quickly, and in revising his work he invariably finds something new to add. I encourage him to use all available time to think over and add touches to his work.

Science Arts Intergration

In Science Arts Integration we are addressing their Science lesson plans covering the makeup of the human cell. Each student chose a specific organelle that is contained within the cell as their topic. Their job was to create a cartoon character of that organelle, using the formal elements of art-line, shape, and color to represent it's appearance and function. Adam did a great job visualizing his character and coming up the creative solution of making him the postal delivery system.
