A note from the principal
We've managed to get through the first six weeks of school in what seems like record time. It is hard to believe, time goes so quickly. The students are working hard to get into their routines and really concentrate on learning everything they can. We appreciate everyone coming to Open House last week, there was a very nice turn out.
With cooler temperatures comes the need for jackets in the morning. Please write your child's name in their jacket so in case it is lost they can get it back.
Thank you for supporting our school and your child's teachers. It makes all the difference.
OPEN HOUSE
Thank you all for attending Open House on the 27th. We had so many families finally be able to be at school again. We appreciate all you do every day to help us here at West Buncombe. Here are a few pictures of Open House.
Progress reports coming home soon
On October 14th, you will be receiving several reports from beginning of year assessments. (BOY). These assessments will include MAP, MCLASS, and a progress report. Should you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Parent Conference
Can you believe it? We are half way through the first quarter and because of it teachers will be reaching out to you to schedule a conference. Please take time before your meeting to think about questions you have. This is a great time to check in on some of the following:
- Ask if there are questions or issues your child wants you to discuss with the teacher.
- Plan to bring something to take notes with (paper and pen or a laptop or other device).
- Share a few things about your child with the teacher — interests, strengths, favorite subjects — to help the teacher know your child better.
- Write down questions or topics you'd like the conference to cover. Depending on your situation, you may want to ask about:
- whether your child is meeting grade-level expectations (not how he or she compares with peers)
- what the teacher sees as your child's strengths and challenges and how these are being addressed
- other services to help your child grow as a learner
- making a plan to check in regularly if there are any learning or behavior problems
- your child's work habits
- how your child gets along with other students in class and during lunch, recess, phys-ed, and other classes
Field Trips
As we move further into the school year many classes will be participating in class field trips. Field trips not only provide kids with a memorable experience, but also allow students to gain valuable background knowledge that they can later apply to their learning. In order to help, please submit any required funds well in advance, children should wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and don't forget to send a water bottle. We are so lucky to live in an area that has so much to offer.
Cafeteria
- Complete the lunch application to apply for free/reduced lunch. We have copies at our school or you can apply at www.lunchapplication.com. You'll need your student's ID number. Remember, lunch is $3.50 for each student this year.
- Load money on your child's lunch account at https://www.k12paymentcenter.com. You can also pay with cash.
- Your student can also purchase a la carte items in the cafeteria, but they can not charge them. They must either have cash or money on their account.
