HIDDEN RIVER HEADLINES 3/21/19
9224 Paradise Lake Road, Snohomish, WA 98290
A MESSAGE FROM MR. JUDY AND MS. SIMEONI
A number of studies have shown that there is a link between involvement in school activities and student success. Being involved in school can improve grades, attendance, behavior and self- esteem. Being involved means being a part of something. It is a way to take ownership of your time at school and create a meaningful and positive experience. Part of our mission at Hidden River is creating a space for all kinds of student interests.
These are just a few ways we are working with students at Hidden River to help them identify and celebrate the ways they are growing, which is a critical part of the work of reclaiming the middle school experience!
- Offering a variety of electives including band, art, leadership and robotics
- Makerspace in library
- Clubs, both during and after school provide lots of opportunity for our students to share a collective interest. Here are some of the clubs we have offered:
o Anime Club
o Drama Club
o Study club
o Game club
o Coding club
o Book club
- Lunch sessions with teachers
o Documentary Thursdays in the science room
o Hang out and play board games in the classroom
- Our break times offer a variety of fun things to do
o Basketball
o Volleyball
o WEB activities
o Library for games, hanging out, exploring books
o Hang with friends in the gym, library, or outside
We are always looking for more “spaces” to create and would love to hear ideas from students. Their interests drive what we do here as we strive to make our middle school a place kids feel ownership, pride and a connection to their middle school.
Mr. Judy, Assistant Principal
Ms. Simeoni, Counselor

Athletic Participation – From LiveStrong.com
“The positive effects of participation in interscholastic sports at the middle school level
has been reported in multiple studies over the last several decades. Students participating
in one or more interscholastic sports had an average grade point average of 3.151, while
non-athletes had an average of 2.4, according to a study of interscholastic sports
participation published in the NASSP Bulletin, the journal of the National Association of
Secondary School Principals. Athletes have higher grades than non-athletes even when
socioeconomic status, gender, age and family composition are taken into account.”
As always, if you have questions or concerns please call.

PREPARING FOR STATE TESTING
Every Spring, students across Washington State take the Smarter Balanced Assessment to measure their learning and growth over the past year. This assessment helps individual students and families gain an understanding of their student’s strengths and areas of growth. Also, this experience provides valuable data for us as a school to examine how we can best serve your students’ learning needs and aids us in our planning for our ongoing improvement.
We are already preparing at Hidden River Middle School for our upcoming testing season! Please see the attached HRMS Testing Schedule for details about our testing weeks.
In short, the following weeks will be impacted by state testing:
● April 29 - May 3: SBA Math
● May 6 - May 10: SBA Math Make-ups (no schedule changes this week)
● May 13 - May 17: SBA ELA
● May 20 - May 24: Science WCAS (taken in 8th Grade Science classes)
Please make sure you consider these dates in your spring calendar planning, and communicate with our office if you have any questions or known absences for your student during these weeks.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
The month of March, every year, feels like the longest month of the school year for most students. This year, in particular, we have gotten hit hard with student illnesses!
That said, we are still working toward our goal of “90 at 90!” This means that we are working to have 90% of our student body attending at least 90% of school days. With about 60 days left in our school year, that would mean being absent for fewer than 6 days.
Did you know that your students are involved in a grade level competition for this goal? Because of the size of our cafeteria, there is one class per quarter that has to split up at lunch into two groups, meaning they may not be able to eat with their friends. During 3rd Quarter, the top attending two grade levels will get to stay together during lunch for our last quarter of the school year. We are excited to see which grade levels come closest to reaching our goal of “90 at 90” during 3rd Quarter!
To excuse an absence:
· Call (360) 804-4101 or (360) 804-4104 or
· Send in a note with your student or
· Enter on Family Access at www.monroe.wednet.edu Please remember - Early releases due to illness must be checked out through the Health Room.
- All absences must go through the Attendance Office, not through your students’ teachers.
- Absences must be excused within 72 hours or they will remain unexcused.
- Going on vacation? Student must get a “Trip Request Form” from the office for assignments if you will be gone for more than 3 days. This form needs to be signed by teachers, principal and parent.
Any questions or concerns, please contact our Attendance Secretary, Debbie Schelfhout at (360) 804-4104.
