Kindergarten Class News
February 20-24, 2017
Daily 5/Reading
The Kindergarteners have been working hard on writing this week. In their communication binders each week, you will start finding a "writing prompt" page. The students will draw a picture and write a sentence or two in response to the prompt (their favorite place, something they love, etc.). It is so fun to see where their writing starts and where they end up by the end of the year; these prompts are a great way to track that progress! Adjectives have also been an area of focus this week. We learned that "describing words" can be color words, size words, or shape words.
Math
We started learned to subtract this week! Some strategies that we have learned to use are using manipulatives such as connecting cubes or pictures to help us solve problems. We also started doing our "Story Problem of the Day". To get the hang of these, we are starting with addition problems and will work our way to subtraction. The students and I discussed the "clue words" that we can look for in a story problem (such as how many, in all, left, more, less etc.)
Science/Social Studies
The students and I wrapped up another science unit by talking about how to help our planet. Some of the ideas offered by the students were picking up garbage, not littering (they sold out some of their parents on this one...haha!), and turning the lights off when you leave a room. We began a new Social Studies unit that will focus on "Our Traditions" and traditions of different cultures here in the United States and around the world.
