Penguin Press News
The Week of June 25th
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Parents,
We made it to the last week of school for tracks 2, 3, and 4! We have so many wonderful celebrations of hard work this week. Please make sure you visit our school calendar for more information.
Teacher assignment letters went home today in folders. We made every effort to ensure an appropriate placement for each child. We have reviewed rosters with current classroom teachers, counselors, and support staff. At this time, please do not contact our front office or administration asking for a teacher change. These placements are final.
Please help us by remembering to have your students to school by 9:15 AM. If you are running later than 9:15, students will need a tardy slip to class. Parents are required to accompany their child(ren) into the building when they are late.
If you are planning to pick your child(ren) up early, please remember to do so by 3:20 pm. We will have sign out sheets available in classrooms at the conclusion of family events, should you want to take your child home.
- Be on the lookout for our Opening Penguin Press Newsletter, which will be sent the week of July 2nd. We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

Interested in Laurel Park's First Lego League?
First Lego League 2018-2019 Season
Do you have a 4th and/or 5th grader that enjoys Legos? Does your child have an interest in robotics and programming? Does he/she enjoy solving real-world problems? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your child would love to be part of First Lego League.
What is First Lego League?
Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. Guided by adult coaches, First Lego League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.
It all adds up to tons of fun while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. Along their discovery journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and even presentation skills, as they must present their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges. They practice the Program’s signature Core Values.*

We are looking for kids that would like to be part of a FLL team during the upcoming 2018-2019 season. The name of this year’s challenge: Into Orbit. The theme is living and traveling through space (Into Orbit). Each team will receive their challenge on August first. Teams will consist of 6 kids and 2 coaches (parents). Coaches do not need experience with Legos, robotics, or programming. FLL provides everything you will need to be a successful coach. LPES has enough Lego Mindstorms for multiple teams. Registration fees, etc. will be paid through multiple grants and donations. Given the August 1st start date, we would love to begin the process of forming teams.
If you are interested, please fill out the attached Google Form and join us for an informational meeting on Tuesday, June 12th at 6:00 pm.

Transportation Updates for 2018-2019
t's Time to Request Bus Service for the 218-19 School Year!
WCPSS Transportation officials recommend that all parents who have a Transportation-Eligible student(s) begin the process to register for yellow-bus transportation for the 2018-19 school year. Transportation-Eligible students are defined as those students who currently live inside the Laurel Park Elementary base and who are currently eligible for transportation during the 2017-18 school year. To register your student(s) for transportation services, navigate to www.wcpss.net/transportation and click on the "Bus Rider Registration - 2018-19 School Year" link on the left side of the screen. Complete the application process and that's it! Registrations must be submitted by June 11th to ensure first-day bus service.
There will be separate a registration window for Transportation-Ineligible students (transfer students, joint-custody situations), beginning August 11th. Until that window opens, parents/guardians of Transportation-Ineligible students are responsible for providing transportation to and from school via carpool or walking.
