Scappoose Students, Staff and Families,

Welcome to November! Congratulations to the Boy’s Cross Country team for qualifying for state! Just a reminder, on 11/5 there is NO SCHOOL because staff will be updating grades. Conferences will be held virtually on 11/22 and 11/23. Below you will find an update from our athletic department, info from our senior parent group, and a bus route update for the week, and much more. Please continue reading below for details.

Let's have a great week! Go Indians!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Scappoose High School will be conducting parent and teacher conferences on November 22nd & the 23rd. The times for both days are 8 AM-12 PM, 1 PM-4 PM & 5 PM-8 PM. SHS teachers and counselors will conduct all conferences virtually via Zoom. Please use the following link: Parent-Teacher Conference Sign Ups to secure a time to meet with your student's teachers.

Non-School School Days for November

  • Nov.5th-No School

  • Nov. 11th-No School

  • Nov. 24th-26th-Thanksgiving Break

Attendance Matters

Attendance really matters! We want your student to be here and on time. So, how many absences are needed for a student to be considered truant?

  • Exceeding five days absent, either excused and/or unexcused, in a three-month period may be a truancy violation.

  • Unexcused absences are a child safety issue. Someone should always know where the child is. Oregon state law says an equivalent of four unexcused days in a month may also be a truancy violation.

  • Days specifically excused by doctor’s notes are excluded from any count. The program is intended to be as flexible as each school wishes. The school staff may take into consideration the student’s school performance when determining necessary intervention.

What happens when a student is sent to truancy?

  • A truancy officer will visit with the parent or guardian at the student’s home. The officer will evaluate living conditions that could affect attendance and inform parents or guardians of the Oregon Compulsory School Attendance Law 39.010. The officer will give the parent or guardian a compliance notice to sign and return to the school. This initial step often improves student attendance without further contact.

Backpack Program Returning

Scappoose School District has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank to continue the backpack program. This is a program to provide nonperishable food to families in need. The food is distributed in a discreet fashion, once a week at school. If your family is experiencing food insecurities please reach out to your student's school counselor, social worker, or care coordinator. There is limited capacity for distribution at school so please reach out as soon as you can. Picking up food from St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank is also an option for anyone in the community. Currently, they are open Tuesday and Thursday 1-3pm. (51555 SW Old Portland Rd, Scappoose, OR 97056)

Safety Updates and Student Dropoff

Please reference the link for the updated RSSL document from the Oregon Department of Education’s Ready School Safe Learners for all current regulations.

Parents, please do not use the bus turnaround for student dropoff or pickup. Also, after school, there are no cars allowed in the bus turnaround. Please plan accordingly. It causes safety issues with the loading/unloading process. We appreciate the cooperation with adhering to using the two lower lots for dropoff.

Cafe News

Remember lunch and breakfast are free! Students, please stop in and grab a breakfast sandwich, some pizza, or a delicious sandwich. When you do that, take the time to meet our fantastic kitchen staff.

We are also looking for interested students to work during lunch. If interested, please see Mr. Kelley, Mr. McKedy, or Mr. French for details.

Here is the menu:

November Menu

We have various ala carte items to pick from, such as chips, water, cookies. These items are not part of the free lunch, so make sure you have some money on your account.

Additionally, we need to be more diligent and respectful and throw away our own trash after lunch. Thank you for supporting our custodial team by taking care of your own garbage and eating area.

Bussing Messaging

Durham Bus Services is continuing to make every effort to hire and onboard new drivers as efficiently as possible. Due to the shortage of drivers the following routes: 1,3,4,12, & 13 will not be operating the week of 11/1-11/5. Thank you parents for your patience during this time period.
