Talley Street Update
January 19, 2021
An Update from the Principal
Dear Talley Street Community,
I want to thank everyone for their patience today as we experienced some difficulties with afternoon dismissal and Google Classroom. My Administrative Team and I met to discuss the issues and have made some changes for tomorrow. Originally, Talley Street was to have eleven buses. This was going to be an increase of four buses. The additional buses were the reason for the flip flopping of our transportation plan. As it turns out, the number of bus riders are much lower than expected. Therefore, we are going back to the arrival and dismissal plan from last year. The buses will line up on Talley Street. Car riders will still need to come up Talley Street from South Columbia but will make a right hand turn into the school parking lot. The car rider line will follow the same pattern as we have used this year for the material pickups and the beginning of the year parade. I am confident that this will be a big improvement over today. Once parents have dropped off their child, they will exit the parking lot and take a right onto Talley, then a left onto Sams Street, and will end up at E. College Ave. No left hand turns will be allowed into the parking lot regardless if you are entering or exiting the school parking lot.
The order of dismissal will be as follows. Bus riders will be dismissed first and will be followed by walkers and bike riders. Car riders will dismiss next with the Pod students dismissing last. For parents meeting the walkers, I need your help. Today, several parents did not have on masks and were not socially distanced. We are trying very hard to keep the school open safely. This will take the cooperation of everyone. It would be very helpful if parents could spread out along the sidewalk towards the parking lot entrance. Thank you so much for your help with this.
For issues with Google Classroom, the admin team met with the faculty and staff this afternoon to brainstorm ways to improve. The re-rostering of students has caused some confusion. Please know that the teachers are working hard to fix these areas.
Even with these issues, today was pretty special. I had forgotten how much I missed students being in the building. It makes me even more excited to get all students back as quickly as possible when it can be done safely. Thank you again for your support as we work out these kinks over the first few days of being back in the building and many students having new teachers. Please let me know if you have any questions. You are welcome to email me at email@example.com or call my cell at 404-491-3801. Have a great night!
CSD Nutrition Updates for Spring 2021
We will no longer be using our pre-order system starting on Monday 1/19/21. As K-5 students return to in-person instruction we will continue to offer meals FREE to all students until the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Meal pick-ups for our virtual learners will continue for any student ONLY at our Decatur High School TakeOutSpot during the same 10:30 AM-12:30 PM time frame. Students in our CSD buildings will be offered daily take-home meals as they exit their school. These meal bags will contain both lunch for the current school day and breakfast for the following school day. We ask that all students remember to take meals, as it helps support our school nutrition program. If your child needs a vegetarian meal or has a special diet concern please complete the online survey on our website as soon as possible. We will ensure that these meals are available at the student’s designated school site for in-person students and at Decatur High for virtual students.
Please check out our CSD webpage (https://www.csdecatur.net/nutrition) and our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CSDschoolnutrition) as we continue to finalize our plans for January 19th and on.

Girls on the Run - Register for the Talley team now!
Join our virtual teams at Talley Street! Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The Myths of Racism and Beyond: Personal and Community Reflections
Please join us in January for the next The Myths of Racism and Beyond: Personal and Community Reflections, sponsored by the DEI Committee.
Whether you are a social justice champion or wrestling with these topics for the first time, this workshop will help all of us deepen our understanding of racism and strengthen our commitment to action.
Through independent individual reflections in a personal journal and group sessions reflecting as a community once a month, our Talley Street Upper Elementary community will examine the power of race and discuss its impact across racial lines. Everyone is invited to provide their voice, perspective, and experiences with the power of race.
The series will cover the article “The 10 Myths White People Believe About Racism,” with a paired bite-sized reading and short racial equity video assigned each month. It will include time for independent individual reflections through a personal journal and time for community reflections during group discussions once a month.
The remaining Community Reflections will be Thursdays from8-9 PM on Zoom on the following dates:
If you are unable to attend all sessions, you can work through the personal reflections asynchronously and join the community reflections as you can.
