Teachers Offered Assistance to Enhance Classroom Family Engagement
The Carolina Family Engagement Center (CFEC) at the University of South Carolina College of Education is offering educators free assistance to enhance family engagement in their classrooms.
Applicants must be employed as a pre-K through grade 12 teacher in a South Carolina classroom at the start of the 2021-22 academic year within a school serving students with a poverty index of 60% or higher as calculated by the SC Department of Education.
Teachers may apply individually or as part of a teacher team. Teacher teams are not to exceed three (3) members and all must be in the same grade level and/or subject matter. Each teacher team member must complete and submit an individual application.
Applications must be received by Sunday, May 2. Full information is available on the accompanying flyer or by visiting https://cfec.sc.gov.
Florence 1 Students to Perform at FMU Amphitheater on May 8th
Florence 1 Schools chorus and strings students will perform at the Francis Marion University Amphitheater on Saturday, May 8th at 10 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. with the following line-up:
10:00 a.m. - Elementary Orchestra (Briggs, Greenwood & Savannah Grove)
1:00 p.m. - South Florence Choraliers

The performance was originally scheduled for this weekend (April 24th) but the date was changed due to the strong likelihood of stormy weather this weekend.
Farm to School Day at the City Center Farmers Market is Saturday, May 1st
Farm to School Day at the Market this year will be held on Saturday, May 1st at the City Center Farmers Market.
The event will allow shoppers to purchase plants from area school gardens and learn more about the farm-to-school movement. A representative from the Governor’s School of Agriculture will be at the City Center Market.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the market which is located at the corner of Sanborn and Front streets in Florence.

High School Commencement Details Announced
Florence 1 Superintendent Dr. Richard O’Malley announced that commencement exercises will be held at the Florence Center on June 11th for West Florence (10:00 a.m.) and Wilson (4:00 p.m.) and on June 12th for South Florence (10:00 a.m.)
Ticket distributions are based on school size and the Florence Center ‘s seating capacity with each school’s population. Graduates at West and South will receive ten tickets each and graduates at Wilson will receive 13 tickets each.

2021 Vocal Star Winners Announced
Mountain Bike Team Seeks Bikers, Coaches
Florence has its own Mountain Bike Park and Mountain Bike Team. The High Hill Bike and Run Park is located near Otis Elevator adjacent to the Florence Fire Department Training Center. Last year it was the home to Florence’s first ever interscholastic mountain bike team, the Magic City Rollers/Florence Composite Team. The team is open to student athletes in any school who will be in grades 6-12 during the fall season.
The upcoming fall 2021 season officially kicks off with practice on July 1, 2021. There will be several preseason events where interested participants can take a test spin. The next two upcoming events are:
Saturday, May 1 – Freedom Florence Bike Cruise; Freedom Florence Park, Science South Parking Lot 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.; and,
Saturday, May 15 – Parent’s Meeting/Information Session for New Riders; Phil’s Bicycle World 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
Parents, teachers and administrators are invited to join as coaches whether totally new to biking or ready to go from day one.
