Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby families,
The school year has come to a close and I wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer. A big thank you to all of our community partners, Unidos PTO, and parent volunteers for supporting our students throughout the year--we appreciate you! I also would like to acknowledge and thank all of the teaching staff and students for persevering with Distance Learning through this unprecedented COVID-19 Pandemic. Please enjoy this 5th grade slideshow of memories over the years in K-5th grades. I also want to thank Maestro Jose Manuel for his interpretation of the Roberto Carlos song, "Un Millón de Amigos" performing with Maestros Albert, Vanessa, and Subdirectora Leslie. On a more serious note, with the current George Floyd senseless homicide, I would say the song's lyrics about needing a million friends to help you sing stronger is a great metaphor for needing a million friends to fight and speak out against racism. It could not be more clear to me that our schools and community need to continue to be places of inclusivity, along with multicultural and anti-racist perspectives and pedagogy.
The TK, K, 1st and 2nd grade families will come this Monday, June 8th to pick up their Summer Learning Packets, Report Cards, and return the Take Home Learning Book Bags: Last Names A-L 9:00-12:00 and Last Names M-Z 12:00-3:00pm. Please remember to wear a mask, do not get out of your car, put your child's name and teacher's name on a sign and place inside the car windshield. For 2nd-5th grade families, if you borrowed district Chromebooks and Hotspots you will be able to keep the technology over the summer. The third trimester report cards will be mailed home for 3rd-5th grades. All TK-5th report cards will have comments only: Read the details of the revised report card here. All students should continue to work on RAZ kids/EPIC books and Dreambox over the summer to keep engaged. The 4th-5th grade students also have a few summer integrated thematic NearPod projects around Science and Social Studies. Students should also keep up with reading during the summer. Here are the links to the summer learning packets/projects:

Superintendent Baker presented the preliminary Reopening of Schools plan at the last School Board Meeting. Committees have been established around Safety and Health and Wellness following the County Health Department and CDC guidelines, and Curriculum and Instruction following County Office of Education guidelines. He described a phased in approach and the 4 Pillars for the safe return to school around: Health and Hygiene, Face Coverings, Physical Distancing, and Limited Gatherings. He described a number of strategies within these 4 pillars that must be undertaken to protect staff and students. He also described 3 potential schedule options: a Full Distance Learning Model, a Hybrid Model that combines a few days a week of both Distance Learning and at school in person learning with approximately half the number of students in each class, and a Combination Model where families would have options for Full Distance Learning or the Hybrid model. Finally, he set a goal to finalize the Return to School plan by July 15th. We understand there is a lot of anxiety about what it will look like when we reopen and you will be receiving regular updates from the Superintendent on the return to school plan. The district continues to update the RCSD COVID:19 Information Hub weekly. We also will continue to work with our Sobrato Early Academic Language program model for the best strategies to teach thematically and make Spanish vocabulary and content comprehensible for English only families who are more challenged supporting Spanish in a Distance Learning model.
The Naming Committee recommended the following three names for our school to Superintendent Baker: Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School; Unidos Spanish Immersion School; and MidPeninsula Spanish Immersion school. You should be aware that of these three names, Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School had over 70% of the first place vote. Superintendent Baker will recommend Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion as the permanent name for our school to the Board of Education this Wednesday, June 10th. The Board will then vote whether they approve of the name at the June 17th meeting. I thank you for remaining engaged and participating in this process! A reminder that Board Policy dictates that the committee recommend three names to Dr. Baker who makes the final selection to present to the Board for approval. We are hopeful the name will be approved so we can move on next year with our permanent name.
I would like to thank Secundino and Ninfa Zuno for the important family engagement work they have done with many of our families this year through the United Through Education/ Familias Unidas program. United Through Education builds better communities through the education of the whole family. They offer family based classes with a focus on reading, math, science, technology, health and arts to create a vibrant community with a passion for lifelong learning. Enjoy one of the videos they produced of families working on various projects the last few months during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Please note that the school playgrounds(including play structures and swings) and field are closed. The general public should not be on the school campus.
