2022 August Issue

Words from Principal Rowell

Dear Kohler Families!

Welcome back to the 2022-2023 school year. We hope that you are enjoying the last few weeks of the summer and making wonderful memories with family and friends. I am honored to be part of the school system and am looking forward to working collaboratively with families.

My first focus is to build relationships with students, staff and families and to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. You may notice a few changes as to how we will monitor access to the building and this is as a result of my belief that schools must be safe spaces for all in order for teaching and learning to occur.

My commitment to families is to ensure continuation of excellence through monitoring high quality instructional practices and student engagement, where students can have fun while learning. My goal is to be in classrooms daily to support staff and students. Therefore, if you would like to see me, please call ahead to make an appointment with our administrative assistant, Mrs. Theresa Andrews at 920-459-2920.

In preparation for the start of the school year, we have some information and a few tips to share to ensure a successful lift off and start to the school year for your child.

1: Make sure that your child is registered and you have updated any emergency contacts and made any necessary health changes in Skyward Family Access. To access skyward family access please click here. Your child should check their schedules and print them prior to the first day of class in the event that any changes were made.

2: Renovations of our parking lot should be complete by the start of school, making parking for students and any visitors possible.

3: Be on time. Our doors open at 7:40am. The school day ends at 3:00pm. Students must show their ID's any time they enter the building. This gives us an opportunity to learn names and faces and monitor safety.

4: We ask that your child become involved in our school community through the various activities and athletic offerings. We want students to show Bomber Pride and encourage attendance at school sponsored activities and events.

5: Support your child(ren) by communicating with teachers, counselors, advisors and coaches. Together, we can all make a difference in providing the best experiences and opportunities for every student in our community.

6: Follow us on social media where we will celebrate students' accomplishments including academic, athletic and activities. We are on Facebook - www.facebook.com/kohlermshs, Instagram - @kohler_ms_hs and Twitter - @kohler_ms_hs.

7: We will use this monthly Bomber News to communicate with families and share fun and exciting things that our students are doing.

Welcome back and we look forward to maintaining a strong partnership with our families!

Meet our new High School Counselor

Hi Kohler Family! I am Courtney Nachreiner, the new high school counselor. I am super excited to get the school year started and meet all of our high school students and their families.

I graduated with both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee specializing in Educational Psychology and Adolescent Studies. I am currently working on another degree from UCLA Extension with an emphasis in College Counseling!

I cannot wait to share what I have learned with students preparing for their futures - whatever their path may be. I love being active, spending time with family and friends and my mini Goldendoodle puppy, Reggie.

Students - please stop in my office and introduce yourself! It will always be a safe place for all needs. See you all soon!

Meet our new Activities and Athletics Director

Hello, my name is Ryan Sprenger. I am the new Activities and Athletic Director at Kohler. I have spent the last six years teaching and as the athletic director at Spencer MS/HS.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the students participate in all the extracurricular activities that Kohler offers! We will include an Activities and Athletics section in our newsletter every month.

BIG EAST PASS/FREE STUDENT ADMISSION

Once again this year, students will be admitted to home athletic events for free. We also have Big East passes available for sale in the office. We look forward to seeing the stands packed full of parents, students, and community members!

Communication:

I look forward to talking with everyone during athletic and extracurricular events! If you ever need to get in touch with me please feel free to email me at sprengerr@kohler.k12.wi.us, my office number is 920-459-2920. If you ever want to discuss anything related to a coach, please make sure you and the student-athlete talk directly to the coach first. I also ask that you do not approach coaches directly after a game, and to give any situation a 24 hour cooling off period. I will also welcome constructive input, and look forward to speaking with all of you throughout the year.

Sportsmanship:

We hope our stands are packed with people wearing Bomber Blue at all of our events. We also hope people cheer loudly for our student-athletes to show support for all of them. We would like Kohler to be known for our positive welcoming atmosphere! That being said as you watch the game please let the coaches coach, the officials make the calls, and the players play. We want everyone that attends our events to feel comfortable and want them to come back in the future.

Bussing Situation:

As many of you know, there is a bus driver shortage nationwide. Mrs. Andrews has worked very hard to get bussing for as many athletic events as possible. There may be dates that we will need parent volunteers to drive student-athletes to and from the game. While it is not an ideal situation it is the only solution we have right now to get the student-athletes to some events. We appreciate everyone that helps out with this!

First Day of School

Is Thursday, September 1, 2022. All HS students must remain on campus for Advisory, from 11:00-11:30am through September 9, as we are sharing school wide information and will be covering important safety information.

Jr/Sr Advisory and Study Hall Protocol

Jr/Sr Advisory and Study Hall protocol: Juniors and Seniors can be excused from Advisory and Study Hall with signed parent/guardian permission. Families should return the drop form to the high school counselor or main office by Friday, September 9, 2022. After a student submits the form, they may only attend study hall or Advisory with a blue pass that is generated by the teacher. A student who is participating in a club will be given a laminated blue appointment card with an orange sticker to be on campus. The advisor of the club will take the student’s attendance when s(he) attends.

Attendance

If absent please contact 920-459-2920 and follow the prompts for the attendance mailbox. Email is also an option: Mrs. Andrews at andrewst@kohler.k12.wi.us for middle/high school students: When contacting us regarding the absence or appointment, please state:

Daily Bell Schedule and Block Schedule

Included are the schedules for the high school and middle school for your convenience.

Kohler Schools follows the A/B block schedule. Fridays are no longer an 8 period day. If we miss a day in any given week, due to inclement weather, that day will be made up the following week. The days alternate as follows in a two week period:

Week 1: A-B-A-B-A Week 2: B-A-B-A-B

Food Delivery

Last year students were able to have food delivered to school, during lunch and study halls, from local vendors. We will continue this practice, but will monitor how this goes, specifically as it relates to school safety and potential disruptions within the school day.

GoGuardian

GoGuardian is an educational technology company. The company's services monitor student activity online, filter content, and alert school officials to possible suicidal or self-harm ideation.

Middle School Counselor

Mrs. O’Connor will be out at the beginning of the school year. Mrs. Laura Multer will be the contact for students and families.

Parent/Guardian Volunteers

Big picture
Are you interested in helping out? We could use some assistance in the following areas: chaperones for dances, Homecoming floats, concessions, work sporting events, athletic boosters, substitutes, and junior achievement. Please contact Mrs. Andrews in the main office for additional information.

Safety and Security

Safety and security is the responsibility of all members of our school community. All our exterior doors are alarmed from 8:00am-3:00pm. Please remind your son/daughter that they are not to leave through any door other than Door 2, during the school day. Students will be held accountable should they leave the building and the alarm sounds. Secondary students should not be in the elementary school hallways.

We will hold safety drills throughout the year, to include fire, tornado, and evacuations.

School Picture Day is September 2, 2022. Linked is an all in one school picture pdf that includes our online pre-pay link, pdf order form, and the date and time of your initial photo shoot date.

School Spirit

Show your Bomber Pride by purchasing some Bomber Gear. For more information click here.

Teacher Assistant

Students are able to sign up to be an assistant to a teacher for one class period and earn a 0.5 credit. Please encourage your child to consider doing so, if they have space in their schedule, once all other required classes are scheduled.

Timeliness

Being in attendance and on time to class, prevents disruption and loss of learning. Please encourage your child to report to school on time, ready to learn at the start of class.
