5R Bi-Weekly Newsletter
Written and Edited by Mrs. Riley's 5th Grade Class
Reading
We finished reading the book Angel Island by Alice K. Flanagan and compared and contrasted this book with The Great Migration by Jacob Lawrence. We have been searching through the stories to identify their text structure(s) and discussing how the text structure impacts the reader. We have also focused on finding the main idea and key details of each text to deepen our understanding of the stories. Our next unit will begin next week. We will be reading science fiction books.
Writing
The past two weeks we have been using our informational essay outline to create presentations about the inspirational people we chose to research. After spending time preparing the presentations, we presented to the class. Our focus was on speaking fluently and with expression. Next week we will begin to create our own science fiction narratives.
Math
All math classes have finished the unit on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Our next unit, Unit 4, will be about fractions. We will learn multiple strategies to help us with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.
Science
This week we are learning about all the different types of plants and critters we will be putting in our aquariums and terrariums. Next week, our critters will be arriving and we will be putting them into the aquariums and terrariums we built. We are also studying food chains and food webs and learning how all living things depend on other living things to survive.
