A Note From Principal Miller
Dear CE Families,
With the final two months of the school year ahead of us, I am reminded of a note my daughter received from her aunt in Wisconsin. As Nicole was finishing her senior year, she told her to "Finish Strong." This message really resonated with me as with every school year, we want our students to Finish Strong. Mother Nature tends to distract us from our studies and although play is very important, be sure to create a balance with daily reading and practicing skills such as sight words, math facts or vocabulary. Below is a list of May events. Within this issue, you will find more details to these events.
- May 2nd-4th: NYS Math Tests Grades 3-4
- May 2nd-6th: Bus Driver's Appreciation Week (observed May 3rd)

Our morning assembly theme this month is Flexibility. There is a lot going on in May. For those unexpected changes in our routines, have family talks about being flexible, staying positive and Finish Strong.

McTeacher's Night/Ronald McDonald House Read-a-Thon
On Tuesday, April 4th, CE Teachers and Staff served our local community at the annual McTeacher's Night fundraiser located at the Coxsackie McDonald's. HALF of the proceeds made support school programs and our school community service project: The Ronald McDonald House. The school raised $600 as a result of the fundraiser, $300 of which goes directly to The Ronald McDonald House.
During the event, teachers and staff from CE worked in the restaurant as order takers, drive-thru presenters, lobby greeters and more. McDonald’s employees enjoyed assisting the teachers and staff with their new jobs.
The 2016-2017 Read for Ronald McDonald House Program has raised $2,532.13 to date here at CE with our student participants. To view who's getting involved and to read more about the Read for Ronald McDonald House Program, please click the link for further information: http://rmhcofalbany.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1164335
We still have our CE Community Walk event coming up in June to benefit The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region. More information to follow in the next coming months. Stay tuned!!
Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day
WHAT IS OPERATION SAFE STOP?
Operation Safe Stop seeks to promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts. Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies.
On April 27, 2017 law enforcement officers around the state participated in an Operation Safe Stop day. During "Safe Stop", police officers were on board school buses and in marked and unmarked patrol units on selected bus routes that had a history of illegal passing complaints. See Mr. Nugent's interview below with Spectrum.
Police issued tickets to drivers who passed stopped school buses (Section 1174 of the Vehicle & Traffic Law). All violations are reported to a central command post so that final figures are available to state and local officials as well as the media.
DID YOU KNOW?
An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day.

In advance, we Thank You for your support.
Warm Weather Approaching...
Now that the warm weather is approaching, we have some reminders as to our students’ attire in school. Some of those reminders include:
- Clothing items such as tube tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps and see-through garments are not acceptable.
- Footwear that may be deemed a safety hazard should be avoided. Footwear such as flip-flops and sandals, especially those with small heels, when worn on the playground during recess, often times can cause students to trip while walking and playfully running. In addition, students can trip while going up and down stairs in school. Sneakers are a MUST for PE and RECESS.
The above reminders are taken from our school district’s Code of Conduct. We appreciate your support and cooperation in this matter.
CE Cup Stacking Evening Event
We will be holding an evening of Cup Stacking on Thursday, May 4th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Come and see what all the excitement is all about. Come challenge your child to a cup stacking race requiring speed and dexterity. We will be having all different levels of stackers and a whole lot of fun. You will also have the opportunity to purchase your very own cups to take home and continue to improve your skills. I sure hope everyone will come and give it a try. No experience needed just come ready for a good time! View the flyer here:
