Math Moments at Home!
Greetings to the Vickers families! In this edition of Vickers Voices, we're excited to share some practical and enjoyable ways to bring math into your home. Engaging in math activities as a family not only strengthens mathematical skills but also creates wonderful opportunities for bonding and learning together.
Practical Math Moments:
Cooking Adventures: Turn mealtime into a math lesson! Involve your kids in measuring ingredients, adjusting recipes, and understanding cooking times. This hands-on experience reinforces essential math concepts while creating delicious memories.
DIY Home Projects: Engage in simple DIY projects around the house that involve measurement and geometry. Whether it's hanging pictures, building a birdhouse, or rearranging furniture, these activities provide hands-on experience with mathematical concepts.
Fun Math Games:
Math Scavenger Hunt: Hide math problems or questions around the house or yard. Provide clues that lead to the next question. As your children solve each problem, they move closer to discovering the hidden treasure—a great way to combine math and adventure!
Board Game Math: Many board games incorporate math concepts. From counting spaces to strategic thinking, games like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Chess offer an enjoyable way to reinforce math skills.
Remember, the key is to make math a part of your daily life in a natural and enjoyable way. These activities not only strengthen math skills but also foster a positive attitude towards learning. Have fun exploring the world of math together!
Keep learning and having fun!

Happy Holidays 2023
Hello Vickers Families!
The Christmas season is fast approaching, and the Vickers SLC has planned some wonderful days for students that are fun, educational, engaging, and more importantly a chance to perform an act of charity by bringing in food donations for the PA Foodbank.
We are busy practicing for the K-4 & Choir Christmas Concert (Dec 5th @ 6:00 p.m.) and the Grade 5-8 Band Concert (Dec 7th @ 6:00 p.m.) Both will be at the Carlton Cafetorium with doors opening 30 minutes prior to shows. We will have a Silver Collection which will be donated to the PA Food Bank.
On behalf of the École Vickers Staff, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful and Happy Holiday. Stay safe, be well, and we will see you in the New Year!

A Fantastic Finish to Volleyball Season; Basketball Fever Takes Over at Vickers Elementary!
Dear Vickers Families,
As we bid farewell to an exciting volleyball season, filled with impressive plays, team spirit, and unforgettable moments, we are eagerly gearing up for the upcoming basketball season here at Vickers. I'm thrilled to share some highlights and updates from our recent sports endeavors.
Volleyball Victories:
Our athletes showcased their dedication and talent on the volleyball courts, with several teams achieving remarkable success in the playoffs. A special shoutout goes to our Grade 8 girls who clinched the championship, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship. The Vickers Grade 6 girls team fought valiantly in a nail-biter finals against Shellbrook in the 6/7 girls league, showcasing grit and determination that left us all on the edge of our seats. While both the Grade 8 boys teams faced an earlier exit from playoffs than they had hoped for, their hard work and achievements throughout the season speak volumes about their dedication and skill.
Basketball Season Is Upon Us:
With volleyball behind us, we now set our sights on the basketball court. I'm excited to announce that registration for Grades 6-8 is already underway, and our athletes are gearing up for another thrilling season. For Grade 5 students, registration will commence in early December, so be sure to mark your calendars.
Looking Ahead:
As we look forward to the basketball season, I encourage all parents, students, and staff to join us in supporting our talented athletes. The enthusiasm and energy generated from your cheers make a significant impact on our players, fostering a sense of community and pride in our Vickers Elementary.
Thank you to everyone who made the volleyball season a success, from the dedicated coaches to the parents cheering from the sidelines. Let's carry this momentum into the basketball season and continue to celebrate the sportsmanship, skill, and teamwork that make our Vickers athletes shine.
Here's to a fantastic basketball season ahead!
Sincerely,
Mr. Whitrow

We look forward to performing for you and showing you what we’ve been working on this year so far!
The choir will be singing Christmas carols in the Ches Leach Lounge at the Raider game on Fri. Dec. 15th, and will be singing O Canada
on the ice before the game. It’s sure to be a great night for all involved! Stay tuned for more information.
Band students from Grades 6-8 traveled to Saskatoon on Fri. Nov. 24th to see the U of S Wind Ensemble concert, and members of the choir from Grades 4-8 traveled to Saskatoon on Sun. Nov. 26th to see the U of S Greystone Singers and University Chorus concert. Both outings were well received, educational, and fun! Thanks to everyone who attended for two great Vickers Music trips!
Registration for the Prince Albert Music Festival opens in December and closes mid-January. Students wishing to play solos, duets, or small ensembles should talk to Ms. Lohneis about song selection and registration info so that we can get everything done in a timely fashion prior to the registration deadline. I would love to have as many students as possible participating in solos and small ensembles, as it always makes them better players when they strive to prepare extra music for the Festival! The Vickers Band Parents Association will cover the cost of all registrations ($20+/entry) as a way of encouraging our students to get involved and strive for excellence in performance.
Spring band trip information will be forthcoming in the new year. Just a reminder that parents can work bingos at Carnival Bingo for a $50 credit per bingo worked. This credit is applied directly to your student’s band trip fees and is a great way to defray the costs of these trips. Contact Ms. Lohneis for more information.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Our staff parking lots are a “no drop off zone” as they are out of bounds for students.
We urge parents to support us in this safety endeavor by dropping off your children on the west side of the school on Olive Diefenbaker Drive; on Bradbury Drive, east of the Special Needs bus zone and between Gisi Road and Olive Diefenbaker Drive.
We encourage the children to cross all streets in a safe manner by crossing at the corner or at cross walks. Teacher supervision is also provided at our major crosswalks.
The Community Club rink parking lot is the bus pick up zone after school for our parents to meet their children for pick up. Please refrain from turning around in the driveways, as this is disruptive to the homeowners.

Volunteers Needed for Operation Red Nose 2023
The Prince Albert Lions Club will be sponsoring Operation Red Nose in Prince Albert again in 2023. Community volunteers are the key to the success of the program. In 2022 we provided 130 rides to 275 clients who were impaired or who did not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. They all got home safely.
Although the service is free, clients usually provide donations, which under the provisions of the Operation Red Nose Program must be allocated to youth groups or groups that support youth in Prince Albert and area. The Prince Albert Lions Club has selected area schools as the recipients of these donations to assist with programing for students. As a result of the campaign a total of $4,400 was donated to 11 elementary schools in Prince Albert and area.
The program operates on Friday and Saturday evenings. This year will be starting on Friday, December 1st and run for 5 weekends plus New Year’s Eve. We start around 9 pm in the evening and usually run until 2 am the next morning. New Year’s tends to run a bit later due to house parties.
Volunteers must be at least 19 years of age. They are organized into teams of 3 people, an escort driver, designated driver and navigator.-All volunteers, require a police background check (provided at no cost) and are insured for liability by our provincial sponsor the SGI. Volunteers do not have to use their vehicles since escort vehicles are provided by vehicle dealerships in the city.
Volunteers can choose to work one night, a weekend or the whole season. Come as an individual or put together a team of 3 people. We find News Year Eve is one of our busiest nights. Volunteers are provided with food, coffee and camaraderie during the evenings they work.
If you are interested in helping out with Operation Red Nose, please contact me at (306)763-7434, (306)425-7804(cell) or by email at rbraaten@sasktel.net.
