Parenting Corner (The World Cup Comes to Mountain View!)
On Monday morning, I made this announcement: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uvihZuZqUVy22lfz3xMs9eTJbm5O_uf4/view?usp=sharing
The 2022 FIFA World Cup “kicks off” (see what I did there?) on Sunday, November 20th. As a lifelong USA soccer supporter, I’ve been waiting 8 years for this (the last time they qualified was in 2014) and this is the first and only time school has been in session for the world’s biggest sporting event!
Here’s what we are going to do:
Video clips were shown throughout the week that explain how the tournament works and to get kids excited.
Ms. Sanchez and I visited each class this week for them to draw a country. Each class will follow their selected country and, at teacher discretion, can do as much or as little as they’d like: ask students to possibly dress up in the colors of their team’s “kit” (that’s what a soccer uniform is called) on game days; learn where their country is on the map and some facts about it; when their class plays another class, have some fun kind of competition or activity with both groups of students, etc.
The winning team/class of the entire tournament will get a pizza party the week of December 18. Second place team gets an ice cream party that week. Third place team gets “Smencils.”
There will be some other random activities throughout the month-long tournament.
At home you can have a lot of fun with this and make it a learning experience as well. Please ask your child what country their class picked from the “World Cup Cup.” From there it is fun to locate where on the planet their country is and to learn about that country’s language (maybe try and learn a greeting), customs, and culture. I just googled “traditional Moroccan dishes” (Ms. McCrea and I got Morocco) and I’ll likely make my family kebabs and couscous for dinner on a day when Morocco plays. I think we’ll pass on the Stuffed Fried Sardines.
The World Cup is a good example that America “is not like a blanket- one piece of unbroken cloth. America is more like a quilt- many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven together by a common thread.” With students from Turkey, Mexico, Ukraine, Honduras, Iraq, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and Uganda (as well as others), Jesse Jackson could have said the same thing about Mountain View Elementary School. I’m thankful for our quilt.
Please take the time to view the following video on how we teach reading in our school.

Message from PE
Tennis shoes for PE:
Please help keep your child active in PE by making sure they wear their tennis shoes to school each day. Many students were unable to climb the rock wall and cargo net/ropes during Physical Education class this past week because they were not wearing tennis shoes. The PE classes are on a rotating day schedule that can change weekly so it's best to just have them wear their tennis shoes to school every day. This will also help keep them safe at recess. Thank you for your help!
4th and 5th grade Family LIfe Education reminder:
The deadline to opt your child out of Family LIfe Education is this coming Tuesday, November 22. Check your email from last Friday for more information.
