Forces of Nature
What's the safest place on Earth?
Investigation
The problem is that the the earth is full of dangers and the forces of nature can be destructive and devastating.
Here are some examples:
1. Earthquake and tsunami, Japan (2011)
So far, 8,649 people have been confirmed dead and another 13,262 are missing since the 9.0-magnitude quake struck off the coast near Sendai, Japan, on March 11, 2011.
2. Hurricane Katrina, U.S. (2005)
Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was one of the worst disasters in the U.S. history. It made landfall along the Gulf Coast on Aug. 25, 2005. At least 1,836 people died in the hurricane and in the subsequent floods.
3. Sichuan Earthquake, China (2008)
The May 12, 2008, Sichuan earthquake was a deadly earthquake that measured at 8.0 magnitude. The quake killed about 70,000 people and left more than 18,000 missing. The epicenter was 80 km (50 miles) west-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, where almost 4 million people resided.
4. Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004)
The US Geological Survey estimated that this earthquake delivered the equivalent amount of energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-like atomic bombs. This unleashed giant killer waves that moved at jet airliner speed across the Indian Ocean. The energy behind these phenomena (between 9.1-9.3 magnitude) was actually enough to cause the entire planet Earth to vibrate 0.5” or 1cm+. The death toll was estimated to be in the region of between 230,210-300,000 human fatalities across the bordering land
masses of the Indian Ocean.
5. Haiti Earthquake (2010)
This earthquake was recorded at 7.0 magnitude and consequently also delivered a minimum of 52 aftershocks (measuring 4.5+ magnitude). At least 3 million people were terrorized by this power blasting event. It is thought that 316,000 people had died, 300,000 injured and millions ended up homeless. This awesome phenomena left around 280,000 building structures leveled to the ground.

My task is to work in pairs to investigate, plan and create a video that demonstrates my ideas and understandings of “the safest place on earth”, using knowledge and skills from Science, Technology and Humanities
Target Audience
The target audience will be Grade 7 students and teachers who will be acting as potential home-buyers.
-Testing Method
The product will be:
- a short persuasive film (aka infomercial)
- shown to my target audience on Wednesday, 29th of May
- The target audience will fill out the feedback forms
-Design Specifications
The product must be:
1. 5 minutes in length including the title and credits, but 10% under/over is acceptable.
2. contain original and appropriate music.
3. worked with a partner and both partners should appear in the film.
4. balance of a original film footage of 50% and stock film footage or photographs of 50%

6. effective use of text.
example) title, subtitle, captions etc.
7. demonstrate effective editing techniques.
8. motivated and persuasive.
9. demonstrate excellent video capturing skills.
10. include data, justify the location of the safest place in the world.
-Research
I conducted some research about the relationship between music, films and emotions and this is what I found:
a) Find some excellent examples of effective use of music in films where the music enhances the story-telling experience.
"Shine your way" by Owl City, The Croods (2013)
The Croods uses music effectively. When the song "Shine your way" is playing, Eep is looking the sunset with happiness and surprise all over her face and also when the Croods and Guy are on the way to the mountain, chatting and having all those fun together.

b) I conducted some research about the relationship between music and mood/emotion and discovered this website:
- Music and mood are closely interrelated -- listening to a sad or happy song on the radio can make you feel more sad or happy. However, such mood changes not only affect how you feel, they also change your perception. For example, people will recognize happy faces if they are feeling happy themselves.

StereoMood is a free internet radio music service that offers users a unique way to choose what they want to listen to. In stereomood.com, you have various choices of moods to express how you feel. So if you click on one of them, you'll get a list of songs that suits the mood you chose.
c) I used www.soudation.com and created a song that is: 3minutes, uses dynamics, is uplifting, danceable and motivating. You can listen to my song here: http://soundation.com/user/jinnymediamagic.
Through creating this song I learnt:
- how to make a 3-minute song
- how to make a dynamic music
- how to use Soundation
- how to use beats to make the the music danceable and exciting
- how to connect one beat to another
Through the process I also increased my skills and understood:
- what a dynamic music is
- how the beats make the music danceable
- how to make different kinds of music using different types of beats and melodies
d) I used www.clubcreate.com and created a song that is 3 minutes, is sad, emotive, moving and evokes feeling of devastation and destruction. You can listen to my song here: http://clubcreate.com/song/5187ae8f-2e9c-70eb-6b00-000f1a000000. When I compare and contrast the online tools clubcreate.com and soundation.com my thoughts are:
- I had to listen to each one beats or melodies to get what I need/want for both.
- soundation.com looks easier at first, but it wasn't grouped with the same kinds of melodies so clubcreate.com was actually easier.
- soundation.com gave me hard time figuring out the duration of the song, however, clubcreate.com was very easy.
- clubcreate.com had various choices, but soundation.com was better because the variety of different types of music was wider on soundation.com.
- Using soundation.com to make music was easier than using clubcreate.com because I felt more active making happy music than making sad, emotive music.
e) I conducted some research about Infomercials and this is what I discovered:
- An infomercial is a TV program that promotes a product in an informative and supposedly objective way.
- Infomercials are also known as 'Direct Response TV'.
- There are long-form infomercials, which are typically between 15 and 30 minutes in length, and short-form infomercials, which are typically 30~120 seconds in length.
