Grade 5

6th - 9th September

Welcome to Grade 5!

Firstly we would like to welcome students and parents to grade 5. Every week we will be sending a weekly newsletter home to update you with what we have been doing and any upcoming events to remind you of.

The students had a great first week back to school in Grade 5. We started off the week with some 'getting to know you' activites to help the students get to know their new classmates. We also discussed the expectations of grade 5 students being roles models for the rest of the primary school and the possible roles and responsibilites they could take up this year.

The students also had a chance to write a letter to themselves about their first day of school and how they felt. This was sealed in an envelope and put into their portfolio so that they can open it up at the end of the year.

We created individual time capsules. This information such has their height, favourite subjects, favourite food, birth date etc. They also included a bucket list of 10 things they wanted to accomplish this year and a pictured of themselves. This will also be put away and opened at the end of the year.

Mathematics

This week we had a Place Value assessment to get a better understanding of what the students already know and what we need to focus on for the next couple of weeks.

Unit of Inquiry

This week for UOI the students were introduced to the first unit 'Who We Are'. The central idea for this is 'understanding ourselves as individuals can help us fulfill our responsibilities in our community'.

We also reviewed IB vocabulary such as transdisiplinary theme, key concepts, learner profile, PYP skills and attitudes. Over the next week students will be looking at the lines of inquiry and the key concepts that relate to them.

Other

The students had a chance to develop there IT skills this week by creating their portfolio title pages and creating their own timetables. It is important for them to also continue practicing their typing skills at home.

Upcoming Events

On Wednesday 16th September from 5:30pm- 6:30pm, there will be a Back to School night. This is an opportunity for parents to meet the teachers and discuss the expectations for the academic year.
