Math
1. Exploring multiplicative comparisons and being able to show our understanding through written words and drawings of array's or area models.
2. Reviewing Area and Perimeter with a deeper understanding.
3.Factors and multiples.
All of three of these subtopics of Cluster 2 require a true knowledge and mastery of each students multiplication tables. This is an excellent time to review all of their tables with them to help them master these if they have not done so already. This Cluster is building on the 3rd grade skill of multiplication.
English/Language Arts
This week, we will begin a whole grade novel, Esperanza Rising. Each student in the fourth grade will read this book, but instruction will be done in small groups. Small groups will address individual student need. While we are working in small groups studying this novel, we will also work whole group on several selections from our Journeys series that mirror skills taught in small group. These units will take several weeks to complete. Some of the skills focused on include making inferences, character development and effect on plot, setting and its effect on plot, summarizing, comprehension, and fluency.
In writing,we are continuing to look at sentence structure including types of sentences. Once we are fluent in these skills, we will move on to paragraph writing and narrative writing. Our goal is to write a cohesive, five paragraph essay on one topic with correct punctuation, grammar and spelling by Thanksgiving.
Science
In this unit of study we will focus on electricity and magnetism in all aspects. From atoms to conductors and insulators, poles, attracting and repelling, voltage and so much more.
As always, most work for Science is done in their Science Notebooks, and students are always welcome to take them home daily. They just need to also return to school with them each day.
