Note from Mrs. Garza
Have you ever been to a parent teacher conference and the teacher was raving about how well your student behaves while at school? I know I have, and I also had to ask the question if they were talking about the same little boys that live with me. When students are at school all day long, they are focusing a lot of time, energy and efforts on making sure they follow the school expectations and have appropriate behaviors. We are helping students learn appropriate behaviors by teaching skills and breaking habits using similar terminology in all areas, and in all classrooms. Please review the information below and think about how using this language may help your student while at home. I know we are working on the following ones in my house:
· Just because we think it, doesn’t mean we should say it.
· We follow directions right away.
I wish you all a great week full of joy and time with those you love most.
Common Language
The following is taken from Teach Skills and Break Habits by Dan St. Romain and is a reminder of the common language we are committed to using here at La Vernia Primary School.
Following Directions
- We follow directions right away.
- A teacher’s job is to keep you safe and help you learn.
Paying Attention
- We pay attention with our eyes and ears.
- Where the eyes go, the brain follows.
Being a Good Friend
- Good friends are inclusive.
- Good friends use kind words.
- Good friends take thoughtful actions.
Respecting Personal Space
- We keep our hands, feet, and other objects to ourselves.
- I have my space. You have your space.
Getting Attention Appropriately
- When I want the teacher’s attention, I raise my hand.
- Just because we think it, doesn’t mean we should say it.
