Pontiac School News
March 5, 2020
Congratulations to our School Improvement Council!
The SC-School Improvement Council is pleased to announce that the Pontiac Elementary SIC is one of five (5) local School Improvement Councils from across the state – based on their Level One and Level Two applications for this year’s Dick and Tunky Riley Award for SIC Excellence – named as finalists for the 2020 Riley Award.
Now in its 19th year, the award is named for the former US Secretary of Education and South Carolina Governor and his late wife, and recognizes the vital contributions made by more than 1,100 local SICs and their nearly 13,000 SIC members across the state.
This year’s finalists are, in alphabetical order:
• Chapin Middle SIC (School District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties)
• Flowertown Elementary SIC (Dorchester School District Two)
• Millwood Elementary SIC (Sumter School District)
• Pontiac Elementary SIC (Richland School District Two)
• Round Top Elementary SIC (Richland School District Two)
An independent panel of outside judges will review the finalists' applications/portfolios in the coming weeks and select the winner of this year’s Riley Award. The recipient of the 2020 Riley Award will be announced at the SC-SIC Annual Meeting, scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the SC State Museum in Columbia.
Please join me in congratulating our SIC Chair, Mrs. Pamela Ball and the other members of our School Improvement Council for their continued efforts towards increasing literacy community partnerships at our school.

~Family Writing Project~
March is when we celebrate Music In Our Schools. If you would like to participate in our monthly writing project, please use this MUSIC CHANGES LIVES template to write, as a family, and tell us all about how music makes your lives better. Do you listen in the car? Has a song ever moved you? Do you have to just stop and dance when a great song starts to play? Do you or someone you know play an instrument? You are welcome to write a poem, a story, or any other format you prefer...it’s time to be creative! Please also color/decorate the template. When your family is done writing, simply send it to school with your child. You may also send in photos with your writing! We will display as many of the writings as possible on the “Family Writing Project” bulletin board throughout the month of March.
Greater than I, you will never be. I have a FAMILY who writes with me!

Health Room News
A message from our school nurse
Parents please keep students at home if they are having flu like symptoms. These include fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, body aches and increased fatigue. We are seeing an increase in these symptoms over the past week.
Students are to remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of medications such as Motrin and Tylenol.
Our school nurse would like you to report any confirmed flu cases to your child’s teacher or directly to Nurse Larck.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS ABOUT DISMISSAL!
Further, please keep in mind that all parents are asked to drive through the car rider line, following the blue line. Please do not park and come inside the front office. This slows down our car rider procedures. It is our intent to ensure our end of the day procedures are safe and smooth for everyone!
Finally, to ensure the safety of all students, we only have one primary mode of transportation listed for each student for daily dismissal. Please remember: If your child is going home a different way than usual (whether it is for one day, one week, etc.), the school must be informed appropriately. Please send a written note to your child's teacher or call the school to inform us of these changes. If your child's mode of dismissal transportation has permanently changed, we also need to be informed in writing or by calling the school. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and for helping ensure we get our students home safely each day.
