Long Way Gone
Kahley Mitchell
Ishmael
Ishmael is slowly losing his innocence. By being captured by the rebels and almost being killed, brings him to realize what the world is really like. He is not the same, happy young boy in the beginning, but a young man that has lost his purpose.
Connection
Today, Isis is recruiting young children to fight for them. This is similar to the book, A Long Way Gone, because the African rebels are capturing children too.
Conflict One
Man vs. Society
Ishmael and his friends are being attacked by rebels. They refuse to do what they say and escape. This is man vs. society because Ishmael is against the rebel leadership.
Setting
This book takes place in multiple villages in Sierra Leone. It also takes place in New York sometimes.
Conflict Two
Man vs. Self
Ishmael becomes frustrated with living in fear so he leaves his friends. On the inside he is scared and upset that he'll never see his family again. However, on the outside he is brave but frustrated. This is why it is man vs. self.
