Winter Break is Nearly Here!
Dear Parents,
In a few short hours, winter break will begin. Thank you so much to each and every SBMS student and family who contributed to what turned out to be an awesome first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. I am so proud of what our community has accomplished together despite the hardships of this year.
As we close out the semester, I hope you enjoy a lovely holiday, filled with the spirit of the season and time spent with loved ones. I know COVID will likely modify most of our holidays, but I hope you are able to find the time and opportunity to refresh, rejuvenate and prepare for a great new year in 2021!

Holiday Challenges from Dr. Blaine!
Congratulations on making it to the end of the first semester of what has been an unusual, but wonderful, school year! During these two weeks off, we challenge all of our families to take the time to remain engaged with learning, and each other.
Here are a few ideas how:
Challenge 1: Winter Break Reading Challenge: Research shows that reading 20 minutes per day has a tremendous impact. Whether you curl up with a book, read a book out loud with family, or listen to an audio book…just keep reading!
Having trouble finding a book? Visit the recording of a previous Parent U, where we covered unpacking the ReadSBISD Parent Guide. Here, at the 17:38 mark, you will find instructions on how to access a wealth of eBooks!
Challenge 2: Character Strong Family Dares Take some time during the winter break to grow closer as a family. Character Strong follows the C.A.R.E. Model for their Family Dares, and these Dares include all four components: Conversation Starters, Acts of Kindness, Recreation and Rest, and Expressions of Love.
Conversation Starter: No Tech Table Time: Have a no technology dinner night. Have everyone store phones and other distractions away and enjoy a meal or snack together!
Acts of Kindness: Kind Conference Call: Call a family member or friend that, as a family, you haven’t talked to in a while. Try it “out of the blue” and surprise them by having everyone on the line to say hello, catch up, and share why you’ve missed them. If they don’t pick up, leave an epic voicemail filled with some kind words from each person!
Recreation and Rest: The Collaborative Cook: Plan and cook a meal you’ve never tried before as a family. Make sure everyone helps create the meal and then sit and enjoy it together. With how many phases can you involve the whole family? The shopping? The prepping? The cooking? The cleaning? At the end, give yourself a Yelp review by assigning a number of stars and reviewing the atmosphere of the “restaurant.”
Expressions of Love: Record of Accomplishments: As a family, write down all that you have accomplished together over the last year. Use photos that you’ve printed, documents that you’ve saved, or pictures on your phone as a way to jog your memory and create a one-page paper that represents the highlight reel of the past few months. Take some time to celebrate and be grateful of the good you’ve gone through.

Literacy Resources for SBMS Families
As you may or may not be aware, elementary and sixth grade teachers across SBISD are participating in implementing techniques and training from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Program (TCRWP) out of Columbia University. This training is anchored in the tenets of balanced literacy and intend to develop strong agency in our readers and writers. Our SBMS Sixth Grade Language Arts teachers have done a phenomenal job learning and implementing this content and analyzing outcomes they are seeing in their students. We are so proud of them and are excited to see the program advance to 7th grade.
We recently received presents from TCRWP that extend to families, too! Below are links to videos and content that will help you, as parents, support your readers and writers. Enjoy!
- The Family Video Collections - These collections help parents and caregivers with ways to support their children with reading, writing, phonics, and finding and accessing books - especially digital book collections. The videos are between 3 and 9 minutes in length, on a variety of topics, and we'll be adding new videos to the collection periodically. The videos will be captioned in Spanish and Mandarin so that more families can access these resources. Please click here to access them.
- Book Collections - We've also created padlets of some fabulous book collections, to help your families find more books their kids will love to read. These include:
Best of Children's Literature - 2019
BIPOC & Own Voice Authors Grades 4-8
BIPOC Authors and Illustrators of Children's Nonfiction
Great Graphic Novels Grades 1-9
Get Kids Into Reading with Series! Grades K-5

SBISD Health Screener for In-Person Learners for January 5th
Prior to the start of the school year, all families completed the SBISD Health & Safety Protocol Parent Acknowledgement Form. Included in these protocols is ensuring that every child coming to campus has a completed SBISD Health Screener every morning.
As a reminder, the health screener can be accessed via the district website (there is a blue box on the homepage titled ‘HEALTH SCREENER’ or by clicking here.) High school students may complete their own screener, but not those of their siblings.
Parents, it is critical that you report to your child's school if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has had prolonged (15 or more minutes) direct exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive, or is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Please do not send your child to school. Please do complete the health screener and report to your school attendance office or nurse immediately. Please be sure to provide your contact information including a daytime telephone number where you can be reached.
View this video to see how to turn the screener into an icon (like an app) on your phone or tablet home screen for easier access:
See you soon! Stay tuned for messaging every Friday from SBISD!
