Winter Park Band Notes
October 16, 2017
From Mr. Blackmer
Many, many thanks to the Marching Band for handling themselves so well this past Friday night under the most difficult of circumstances. I was very impressed with their maturity and discipline as we made the trek back and forth from the busses to the stadium several times, trying to get a little bit of playing time in! I was also very impressed with how well they handled the uniform situation once we returned to the Band Room.
A huge thank you Mary Bernard (and Neff!) who came in today ahead of our Leadership to begin the clearing of the marching band uniforms! And many thanks to our Leadership and the many volunteers who came in this afternoon to finish the job!
Congratulations to the Jazz Ensemble I on their terrific performance on Sunday at the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival! I've received many compliments on their performance, including some school officials at the County level.
Please read through this week's Newsletter carefully - there is a lot of information here. It's another somewhat busy week for our students, however, they will get a bit of a break next week in that we do not have a football game next Friday night!
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
Butter Braid Pastry Fundraiser
The Band started their final fundraiser of the school year this past week. They will be taking orders for Butter Braid pastries now through Monday, October 30. The instructions for taking submitting orders through Charms can be found on the Band website.
Butter Braid is a frozen pastry with 6 flavors. Customers can take it out of their freezer when they are ready to enjoy it. The cost is $14 per pastry, and $6 credit for each sale goes into the student's Band account. Brochures were distributed last week to Band students. Your customer sales must be entered in your Charms account and monies collected submitted by October 30. Delivery will take place at 7 PM on Tuesday, November 14 in the Band Room.
All-County Registration
Registration for All-County auditions ends tonight at 11:59 PM! All-County student contracts are due to Mr. Blackmer no later than 6 PM tomorrow night. Registration information and All-County contracts can be found on the Band's website under "Honor Bands."
Concert Attire
Our first concerts are this week and next! Most items provided by the program have already been distributed.
Ladies are provided a black full-length dress. Ladies purchase their own uniform earrings, uniform necklace, closed toe black dress shoes and black hosiery. The gentlemen are provided a black tuxedo. Gentleman must purchase their own white wing tipped tuxedo shirt, black cummerbund and bowtie, black dress shoes and black socks.
All dresses and tuxes provided by the program must be hemmed to fit. This is the responsibility of the student’s family. You may hem the items yourself or take it to a seamstress/dry cleaners to have it hemmed to the proper length.
We are still waiting on the delivery of a few uniform orders. Most items that require alteration have already been distributed to students.
Potential Play-Off Game Scenario
There is a good chance that the football team will be playing in a play-off game the night of Friday, November 10, so please add this to your calendars. The full Marching Band will participate in play-off games (depending on location). If a student has a scheduling conflict with any play-off game, the parents are asked to e-mail both Mr. Blackmer and Mr. Clemente to let them know.
Should the play-off schedule reach Friday, November 24 (the day after Thanksgiving) a sign-up volunteer pep band will be organized for that game.
Senior Night
Come to honor your senior member of the “Sound of the Wildcats!" Pins will be distributed to the parents at 6:30 PM in the Band section of the stands. Senior parents will then want to quickly move to the south end zone by 6:45 PM so that they are ready.
Senior band members will be recognized by name before the pregame ceremonies. Photos of each senior with their parents, Principal Tim Smith and the directors will be taken immediately after pregame. Watch our half time show and hold a special banner for your senior at the final Alma Mater at the end of the game.
Chaperones and Volunteers
All parents who wish to chaperone or volunteer with the Band Program, or any WPHS activities this year, must update their existing ADDitions account (or create one) now. We cannot choose you to chaperone for any Band event unless this has been done. Please take a few minutes to log in and complete this now. You may use the following link to do so https://ocps.samaritan.com/custom/503/index.php.
The Band's first chaperone opportunity is less than 2 weeks away, and we need you! More information is coming at Thursday's parent meeting on how to sign up for specific Band opportunities.
